hi chaps.

I have always had an issue with the clutch and reverse selection in my car. it used to crunch into reverse and pop out. its a pre verto setup.

on a recent rebuild I changed the gearbox case, reverse gear, selectors, clutch plate, pressure plate, release bearing, clutch arm, slave cylinder, gear selector boss on the diff housing.

the clutch is properly bled and adjusted

the car still pops out of reverse unless its held in

recently the car seems to 'slip' in reverse, it squeals and hardly moves.

the clutch is adjusted properly.

so what do people think the problem is? im thinking of changing the gear change mounts, and maybe the gear change. im also thinking of lengthening the clutch slave cylinder plunger slightly as im still not convinced that there is enough travel there for the clutch to engage properly in reverse

all of the forward gears select without problems, also no slippage at all even when on full power

cheers, dan

Surely lengthening the pushrod will have no effect on the clutch engaging?

Have you replaced the linkage or roll pins?

I think i replaced one of them. It pops out of reverse as if its not fully engaging...

Sounds like the selector might be at fault.

Maybe take it apart, and have a look to see if anything is amiss.

Some of the reverse idler gears (the double gear that moves) have a two part bush inside them and sometimes one half of it works its way partly out of the gear which stops it moving its full travel so it won't engage fully and hence is liable to jump out.

Just a possibility.

But that wouldn't explain the clutch issue.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Reverse gear itself is fine, i checked this carefully. Yes i have the rubber boot. So think i might try without this, also change the selector mounts and roll pins. If that doesnt make a difference il swap the selector mechanism from abother car. If anyone has and more ideas please keep them coming. Cheers, dan

Do you have your engine tilted back a long way. Making the reach for the selector longer?

im thinking this too, i had this problem but i had an internal gear linkage. and not so solid engine mounts and it used to pop out of gear when the engine rocked :( doh!

It sounds like reverse gear isn't free to move on the shaft and doesn't fully engage. If its tight on the shaft or catching on the casing this would cause both the jumping out of gear, and if binding up on shaft or casing, it would also put additional strain on the clutch.*oh well*

I had to extend one of the arms on my selector because of a number of things.

what do you mean the selector? the one that attatches to the gearstick? or the actual selectors inside the gearbox

I used rover engine steadies, with solid inserts fitted, so the engine should be in the correct place. there is also no movement

this happened on my old gearbox as stated., I changed the casing as it was cracked, also the selectors, reverse gear and shaft to rule out anything inside the gearbox

keep the ideas coming :) I will look at this over the coming weeks and hopefully sort it as its getting on my nerves a bit now!

cheers, dan

What idle rpm have you got? Reverse doesn't like 1500rpm.

That should be ok......
I'd check the reverse idler...
