have a spare box lying around and since the mini is in one piece for now, i'm going to start the new build for next year by stating with the box.

been looking at SCCR gear sets from mini spares and clubman sets.

am i correct in thinking the clubman set uses the standard 1st gear from the box compared to he complete new set for the SSCR?

whats your thoughts on choice? clubaman or SCCR.

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve
MITP 2012 17.01 seconds 1/4 mile against "The Don"
MITP 2013 16.83 seconds 1/4 mile

I'd like to run a 6 piece but money dictated I ran the 4 piece. More than adequate for most people's needs.

I thought the clubman set was minispares only?

And adding to what Robert and Turbodave brought upwhen buying the minisparres s/c drops you can have 23/24/25tooth primary.and the idler gear stays the same.... same for the input gear i believe (without checking) there is a choice.of tooth there too

Robert,
Yes - basically you just tweek the pitch of the gear and play with the form to get more teeth in the same area. Hence, the gear does change size slightly.

The absolutely best way to see this, and how varying pitch is achievable, is in respect of variable ratio power steering racks, where the ratio "speeds up" either side of the center.

Here is a great image:

Dave. That image. Does that work if you turn the steering rack more than one turn?

Also, are the 19 an 20 teeth ist motion shafts really interchangeable?

If you put a BL 4sync helical CR 1st motion shaft in with a NON CR laygear, problems arise.

Ask me how I know *wink*

Hmm SCSWBSCR,

That sounds interesting Dave.

When the engine comes out of my Clubby I may just give this a go!

Can I send the bill to you if it craps itself? lol

Yes Vegard,
It works. You usually have to turn the steering wheel more than one revolution on car steering racks. *smiley*

My point exactly :)

So how does the new BMW variable steering stuff work then? Magic? :)

I didn't know that the laygear was the same....Interesting. A cheap way to get an ultra CR box *happy*

I don't know about BMW-specific variable ratio racks. But I imagine it is just like the rack shown above, albeit shorter. F1 cars use variable-ratio racks too, but they don't turn more than one revolution; but many road cars with VR steering are still in the 2.5 to 30 turns from lock-to-lock range.

ah, interesting - using a planetary in series with the column, with the input to the planetary driven by what is basically a stepper motor on the housing.
Powersplitting planetarys is really cool - I deleloped some really usefull hybrid drive concepts using various planetary's and drive motor placed between an engine and transmission a few years back.

By manipulating the position of the planetary gear housing, the active steering ECU can synthesize a variable steering ratio or generate steering actions independently of the driver.

Well I know someone who did put the "wrong" 1st motion and it worked... I will follow up with them...
