Alright chaps, been offered a cylinder head off a lad out the local club so going see it satdee, now its come off what he called a running hillclimb sprint engine, but he says its unmolested except for what minisport have done. this is the exact head,

http://www.minisport.com/mini-spare-parts/...nder_Heads.html

now he hasnt mentioned a ball park figure as he wants me come see it first, but what would you chaps say?

BUT on the ad they mention, increased comp ratio. so does this mean theyve skimmed the head to raise the cc for a N/A motor. as if so its useless to me as i need around 26cc in the head.

Cheers for any input lads

i wasnt looking yet in all honesty, but im picking some other bits up of this guy and he asked me if i was interested, id have it sent to phil for some work anyway if i bought it.

So do i just have someone do all the work on my standard unmolested head, or start out with a mildly modified head..?

I'd agree

But I'd say around the £200 mark for that head if it's a gd'un
would need modifying for turbo use unless you've got the super dished pistons
Depends what psi you want to run and the spec of your engine

You'd be better starting with a standard head and sending it to get done what you want.

If this guy paid 600 notes for his, he'll want plenty back.

i dont think he payed that, from what i think hes bought the engine off someone out of theyre 'hillclimber'
the guys always done my good deals on stuff either cheap or free so if its under 200 i dont think i should say no but would have to see what condition its in.

even then youd still say get a standard head all worked?

If it's been skimmed you may struggle to get the chambers opened up enough to get the CR down low enough.

As Andy said, if the head's been skimmed a lot it may not be possible to get the chamber volume you require. Usually the heads are stamped with the chamber volume after the work, so have a look & see.

This head sounds like a a typical case of

" I was told it was such and such head modified by so and so,"

and ends up being boggo standard,.lol

A 37mm inlet on a road head is stupidity!!

Smart Guy!

mainland europe near ze germans

I have seen (and fixed) a few heads that where reportedly done by minisport that where appallingly bad.

It was almost as much work to try and fix it (hard to put cast iron back..) than to just to it properly from scratch. One of the intakes had a bowl so big that there was no metal left for a decent seat with a 35.7 valve and barely even with a stupid 37 mm valve..It ended up with an insert on two seats.

I'd find a decent normal unskimmed head and hand it over to someone that knows his stuff.

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

Their heads used to be decent when they were a proper tuning shop. It seems that their engineering dept. Was highly regarded. But they seem to have gone away from this, more towards bolt on shiney bits. My brother has one of their old st 3 heads, it must be at least 20 years old. He makes good power on his 1380 with that, 296, weber 45 etc etc

I'm running this or an ancestor of it on my car, its now a track day car but i had no problems running 37mm valves on the road

its not problems that it would create as such, but more is there any need for such a huge inlet on a road head?

Plus there is wear to consider.

If I were building a daily drive I would be going no larger than 35.7mm inlets and 29mm exhausts on an unleaded seat and I would probably even use road valves instead of race ones.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

You're right. 37mm inlets being used on wednesdays is the problem....

Sounds like a good buy for the price. I would work out the chamber cc and think about some +20 18cc pistons to get the cr down for turbo use...
