I managed to get hold of a brand new GT17 and it arrived today. I had a look all excited and it's got play!
There's a tiny bit of side to side and what seems like a lot of up and down, I don't think it's quite touching on the inlet side but it's very very close. I assume this isn't normal, I was looking on google to see if you're supposed to do something to new turbos when you get them but some people say there's usually a bit of play in a new turbo and the oil will centralise the shaft anyway. What do you guys reckon? I don't have a great deal of experience with turbos but I reckon I'm going to return it!

I guess it's important to add it's not one of these Chinese ones it is a genuine Garrett unit. 5955703

Cheers, from what I have been reading, play is normal on new turbos but when they get rebuilt they have less play in them but this isn't always the best way as the oil needs to get in there somehow. I might give it go then.

I'd say put it on, if it shits itself, send it back!

put it over a bucket, connect the oil feed to the turbo and your engine, and fire up the engine for a few seconds, and spin the turbine with your fingers.

If it firms up nicely, then you can have faith all is well. It's a good idea to build oil pressure anyways - especially if it hasn't been used in a long time or is brand-new.

I reckon even pumping a bit of oil into the feed hole with an oil can will make it feel a lot better. It did on the ones I have rebuilt.

Ye the TD04L I've got has a lot of side to side play, whether it has oil or not but it spins great, holds boost and has non in and out play, No oil where it shouldn't be and never any water/oil issues. The turbo was off a really low mile(factory miles) uberpoo *smiley*
