Posted this up to help a friend and thought it would be helpful to others.

Find TDC with num-4 valves rocking. Through the plug hole and with a dial gauge and pointer fix the dial gauge to the crankshaft and the pointer to the block, set the dial gauge and pointer to the TDC. from the front of the engine turn clockwise to about 50 thou., then anticlockwise to 5 thou.

Put a mark on the plate affixed to the pointer.

Carry on going anticlockwise to about 50thou again, then clockwise to 5 thou. Put a mark.

Measure between the two marks put a mark in the middle, Carry on Turning clockwise and stop on the middle mark. That's top dead centre.

Ideally this should be done with the cylinder head off but not always possible, it has to be said you have to be really sure that the pointer on the vernier is free to move up and down without binding on the sides of the plug hole otherwise none of this will be accurate

great simple explanation but why do you need to bring it back 5 thou? each time.

I always turn the engine in its direction of rotation through .050" btdc then .050" atdc and take measurements at both never turn it backwards as there will be backlash in your chain

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

Other option for finding TDC without a dial gauge down the hole.

Make a dead stop from an old spark plug. Basically something that the piston will hit and go no further.

then proceed as above. Rotate one direction until dead stop. Place a mark.
Rotate the opposite way until dead stop. Again mark. TDC is exactly in the middle.

Direction of rotation at this point is not important as you are not taking any measurements from the camshaft so chain slack etc doesnt matter.
That will only come into play when taking readings from the camshaft.

I have used both of the above methods.... maybe this time i will make a propper tdc marker instead of thinking ahh feck whilst trying to dial in the crank sensor

:)
Edit: kent cam timing disc pft!!! You need the TM disc worth a few.more curly wurlys darn ' pub

This way your taking the engines slack up in both directions to find true TDC because of the dwell you get when the piston is at the top of its stroke. Its just the same as making a dead stop like stevieturbo says his way is ok if don't have a dial gauge.

i got me ma to tell me when the piston was flat and never went up or down as i was turning the pulley :)

obv not the most efficient solution :)

awesome bit of info though deffo one for tech sticky stuff

Just to add about turning the engine to 50thou I should have said its just an approximate number it can be 40 or 60 it's done to make sure your going far enough back so that when you turn back the crank to spot on 5 thou you have taken the slack up in that direction.

If your not accurate with TDC. When doing your cam timing You will be a long way out.

The way I have explained it above is the way I set up to start cam timing.
