Simple question possibly.....

Has anyone tried the Saab TD04 turbo?
Been doing quite a lot of reading on the GT17, and most Saab people/forums seem to hate the GT17. It seems most advice is to upgrade/use the TD04.
I had a look in a scrappy this weekend, and it seems like it could be made to work in the mini fairly easily, and its really small so would sit at the back in acres of space.
Boost it seems is still capable of 20psi, and spool up seems real early, like 2k.

So the $64000 question..... Anyone used it! If not why not?

I think 1 or two people are using these but not broadcasting it. I don't see why it wouldn't work well.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

A few members iirc,
there are many types of the TD04 available pick the right one and it will work... the impreza compressor and core on a saab exhaust housing wold be a good place to start

Yeah I appreciate there is the 15t through to a 19t.
Haven't done huge amounts of reading as of yet, but is there one I should be looking at specifically? I appreciate you pointing me in the imprezza direction Brett, but which turbo is that exactly if you don't mind me asking?
If anyone is running it on here, what boost are you getting out of it/running at, and what sort of RPM is it cutting in at?

Thanks boys.

My guess would be to wait for a member whom has one to respond if its not to secret to tell anyone. A lot of people as similar questions and like you i guess dont understand compressor maps as well as others. But keep reading mate and do what i did and look at pictures, google a turbo and look ant the images and marry them up.

If i can i'll try and see where i got to on my research last time i looked.

It's not the fitting that worries me, I'm quite happy to do that, it's more the 'worth' of fitting it if you see what I mean.
It's clearly useable on the mini, so it's now worth investigating a bit further I guess. This is all for a second engine, a good year away from now anyway. It's just food for thought.
As for maps, no I did a little reading on them the other night, but went way over my head at 1am!! *happy* lol

Then my question would be why try and dig up answers from members keeping secrets when the gt17 and gt20 are so capable
Imo if i was building another a series the gt20 would be on it 100%

Because I didn't realise secrets were involved.

The TD04 seems ridiculously easy to get hold of, small, the down pipe looks fairly easy to make fit and it was the turbo most Saab people were suggesting to use over the GT17. I've also been offered one with everything adjoining it for what I thought was bloody cheap. And hence it started the ball rolling.

If by this you mean me mate? if you had spent over £700 on a NEW turbo you would tape it up when you was mocking up the down pipe! also you have seen my turbo loads of times when you have been around my place.

The T2 is a capable turbo to an extent, so why use the GT17; see where i'm going with this.

People enjoy discussions and i dont know the state of the turbo market by now but its somewhat strange that we seem to have lost all innovation in the use of "newer" turbos because of that exact same attitude.

i'd like to see less of the smiles/winks and hinting and have a forum that is useful for development. what is good, bad, why people choose to upgrade from a GT17 > TD04..... what members use it and gains they have seen.

So in that respect i find his question quite valid really.

Keeping secrets, and finding out new stuff for yourself is all part of the fun. Some things, like the tee piece trick, Zetec / bmw under crown cooling jets, bored out elbows, gt17, twinspring clutches, and of course pictures of turbo phils sister are things that are so great, you just feel obliged to share them regardless...

first of all i think some one needs to point out the GT17 is a specific turbo.... the TD04 is a range or core size ( much like the GT part of GT17) so you cannot compare directly
there is a TD04 equivalent to the GT17, and similar for the GT20

imo the TD, GT, and K0 series turbos are as modern as it gets, the newer GTr ball bearing garret and the GTX rage are all for much larger engines so i dont really get your 'newer' comment, or the attitude one? - and a further point the most powerfull a series to grace this forum had one of the oldest oldschool turbos on here

my question was more to do with the fact the GT rage is very tryed and tested, quite well documented too, you dont need to read a compressor map to know the GT17 and GT20 work well i think enough members have proven it
they can create enough power for 90% of us and its all here in black and white,
the other 10% will keep secrets i dont know how to put it put it so im going to talk about money?
why are rich people rich?- ill tell ya why because they dont bloody share it ( the rat bastards *happy* )
no in most cases they earnt it, worked hard for it so they keep it
i think thats why we have secrets, *happy*

the fact is people are very secretive on here, its all wink wink, nudge nudge. whats the point in mindlessly copying all the fun is in the learning and finding out for your self

some of the best minis on this forum what do we actually know about them
can anyone answer these questions?
what turbo is on the don?
what cam is in roberts?
what turbo does matt woods run?
what turbo does jim run?

does it all really matter? if you read between the lines the info is here *happy* you just need to fill in the blanks
there is still innovation here, you just need to spot it,

you maybe did not know the depths of secrets on this forum, the vast openness of the info shared on here quite literally takes years to learn and then some secrets your left wondering
there is potentially as few as 1 and as many as 4 members i know of who have tryed/ do run the TD04-ish turbo any more info than that is guessing im afraid,

what turbo is on the don?
Who cares. There's other, much more important areas of the car that makes the Don quick.

what cam is in roberts?
A home brew economy cam.

what turbo does matt woods run?
An old dinosaur with bigger teeth.

what turbo does jim run?
A big one.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Don't be daft, it's all good. :)

It was a question that was a natural progression whilst thinking/reading about the GT17, which is where I guess other people came about the TD04.

I appreciate some secrets are worth holding onto especially if competition is involved, and that really is people's prerogative. I guess I'm from other forums that tend to be more about pushing forward as a collective, so if someone gets an idea for something, it's shared.

There's no grief either way for me, just trying as always to gain knowledge.
If its audio based, I've passed on so much to so many people, I guess I just sort of figured that was the norm. :)

don used a gt25 iirc its stated on there website, roberts cam is probably a worn mg metro one *wink*, matt used to run a t3 but by the sneaky efi he now has i would say a modern turbo as for jimster a small bal bearing turbo most likely the ball bearing turbo from an iveco turbo daily 2.3. personally i would run the last turbo if i wanted 200+ bananas as it has to be one of the most modern small capable turbos for a mini.
