If I were to undo the bolts on the back of the oil pickup mounting plate that is on the rear of the gearbox would the pickup pipe fall into the engine or is it held securely by the other bolt inside?
Also is there a hole behind this plate or is it just solid with two bolt holes?

I would not risk undoing both, the pick up pipe may or may not move, but if it does then you've fucked it.
Not sure why you need it off but only remove 1 bolt, leave the other in just slacken it off to allow you to spin the oval plate round?
There is a hole behind the plate yes, it is to allow a drill access during manufacture of the casing.

Was contemplating using it as an oil drain.
Remove one bolt spin plate refit bolt. Remove other bolt and plate refit bolt then I can fit a stub to the plate for the oil drain and refit same way.
Or is there anywhere else easy to put an oil drain except the fuel pump hole that is easy to do in situ?

I wouldn't be trying to return oil to your pickup. Asking for trouble IMHO.

You cannot return oil there. The pump will scavenge air from the turbo. Forget it.

NO NO NO

That is a suction port. The only options you have are in the Speedo housing, transfer case, or gearbox case. Or use a 12v scavenge pump and send it back to the rocker box.

Any links to a scavenge pump? Or somewhere I could pick one up?

What is wrong with the fuel pump hole?

not high enough. virtually level with turbo. pipe to it is not falling. think it is restricting drain so going to try it somewhere else.

This was how it was fitted. Effectively with the turbo being so low it almost creates a u bend like in a toilet. Not sure if this was affecting it.

IMO that will be ok andy, see what other members say ?

usually peeps use metal pipe work connected with a small peice of rubber pipe

the problem was the cracked turbo casting

Looks alright to me. Doesn't seem to be kinked and the dip in it shouldn't cause a problem.

Also what hose is that and what stub do you have for the turbo as it looks like it would work well for me.

It's a 90 degree 19 to 16mm samco oil resistant hose. It's a standard gt17 oil drain stub cut really low. I will leave it as it is then and hope it drains ok.

I've got one of those oil drains :)

You got a link to the hose?

I feel at a real loss with this. I have the engine in the car, took the turbo off to have it refurbed and now cant get this pipe back on.

There is so little movement available as the turbo drain is virtually level with the block. Every time I try to slip it on it pops off the other.

I was nearly ready to buy an expensive oil pump and just pump it back up somewhere else but can't bring myself to do it. Can anyone think of somewhere else I drain this to while the engine is in the car.

Ideally not speedo housing as I want to run a speedo.

Tighten the clips with a driver or a ratchet and use good quality ones.

Had to trim my hose a bit, it was too long and was pushing itself off/ kinking. Also try getting the hose on and tight beore fitting the manifold to the head

Looking at that, I'd be putting one end on, tightening that, then putting the other end on.
Other thing is - if you sent turbo away, and now the hose doesn't fit, suggests that they didn't re-clock the centre housing to the turbine housing exactly as it was before, and this is why you have the problem.
Loosen off the four bolts (don't remove, just loosen a half-turn) and rotate the centre housing until the hose fit is where you want it, then re-tighten the turbine housing bolts.

Everything is fine. It is just that the hose is short and tight as of the level.

I put the end on the turbo then tried to slip the other end on the block before I pulled manifold onto the head studs. Because there is little play in the hose and the stub off the turbo is cut down lots it wouldn't keep its grip hence it pulling off when i pull it up to the head.

I am going to get an angled piece welded on to the stub in an attempt to remove the angle and give more metal to clamp to.

The flexi jubilee drivers you can buy are extremely useful
