Soon the engine will be mated with the car and in preparation, im wondering which cooling route is best.
My initial plan was to have a custom front mounted rad with fan using a davies craig eletric water pump with the inter cooler mounted above it and some large holes in my fibreglass bonnet. After reading some other threads im a little unsure that this is the best option.

My other choice is to use a decent high capacity mech water pump and an alloy minispares side mounted rad with the standard plastic yellow fan.

Most people using a front mounted rad with elec pump seem to over cool the engine. This i not ideal (though better than over heating).

Im not so worried about cost as i want things to be right and not keep overheating. Am i being a little too over cautious? I found on my previous engine (not turbocharged) that with a standard side rad and elec fan inside the wing that the fan actually blocked air movement so i dont think i would do this again.

Does anyone have any experience of using the elec water pumps?

Thanks!

Both solutions will work. But I have found that a front rad does over cool on my car.

I prefer the mechanical pump for simplicity. Electric pump means pissing around finding somewhere for it, wiring it up, making pipes etc etc.

im planing on the golf rad up front of the clubby with the hole from the std rad being the place for my electric pump as well as the liquid/air charge cooler the rad for that will go in front of the golf rad under the bumper but still behind the clubman sheet metal well thats my aim
as for over cooling the the davis crage pump controller changes pump speed to get the target temperature also if temp gets up it will turn the aux fan on say when sat in traffic
i cant see how the car would run to cold if the pump is hardly turning? different story it its flat out all the time of course
my proposed setup is probably over kill but i prefer to be safe

Hmm i know it maybe over kill to fit the front mount rad and elec pump but my fear is to buy and fit a new mech water pump and side mount ally rad only for it to over heat. At least i can block the front mount rad if its getting too cool.

We had a bloke come in the yard steam pouring out from under his arches because his electric pump decided not to.

Aluminium rad side mounted every time for me.

for a clubby i'd go front mount,
for a roundnose side mounted

just a simple room thing for me

Go on, be brave, put it in the car and tell us how it works.
Pity your bollocks are in line with the flywheel!

Run an alloy side mount, it keeps things very cool. Allows room up front for the intercooler fitment

A front mounted rad was the best thing I ever did for my car, at least I could then blast around without the eventual creep up of temperatures

Thanks for your views guys. I think what i may do as a bit of a trial is fit a Fiat front mount rad (as they are cheaper than having one made!!) use a mechanical pump and see how things go. If i do have any problems (hopefully not) maybe think about using an elec pump there after.

as mr joshua said not having a dig.. there are bad tings about the electric pumps like when they stop. but also good things you can run a timer to avoid heat soak if running a water jacked turbo

also ive heard that some blocks/heads may have a decent amount of flash casting stuck in the jacket making them run hotter no matter what you do luck of the draw i guess

Northamptonshire.

Use a hotter Thermostate like a 88 degrees will thus help stop over cooling on a front mount rad
