Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Basically my daily driver has decided it doesnt want to start.

Sequence of events:

1.) battery goes flat after been sat for 3 weeks, put a starter pack on and off it went. was fine after that, no problems at all

2.) Left it sat for a week and a half (both trips away with work so no choice) and the battery was just about dead, jumped it off with some jump leads and it ran fine.

3.) Sat for another couple of days after that and the battery was completely dead. So jump leads out again off my mates car.

4.) drove off and pulled up at some lights 10mins later and it died. tried restarting but nothing really in the battery.

5.) jumped it off again but just started and then died straight away. then would just turn over as much as you like.

6.) Checked for a spark and that seems fine, took the fuel feed off the fuel rail and nothing there at all. Checked the voltage to the pump and there was nothing there when cranking or just with the ignition on.

Now im thinking possibly the ECU as this would isolate the fuel pump? And possibly jumping it off damaged it?

Only other thing i can think of is the alarm on it has immobilised it but i would of thought it would have done the starter and the spark as well, not just the fuel?

IIRC the spark is dizzy controlled and the fuel is ECU?

Im thinking of hooking up a supply to the pump and try from there?

Anything else i can check out first? Bit annoying really *angry*

Right, got a bit further with it now, went under the back seat to the pump and wired it directly to the battery. Starts and runs fine now!!! *happy*

Thing is i need to figure out why its not feeding the battery? is there a cut off switch somewhere?

Glad it was simple!!

Just need to fix it properly now as i cant drive it as it is with a wire looped round the side of the car to the pump *happy*

tachymetric relay that feeds the fuel pump may be playing up.
common fault on 205 gti's.

Basically the fuel pump relay, but only kicks in with the engine seeing a signal from the crank sensor.

Usually its on the bulkhead of the engine bay.

Have a look at your Haynes manual wiring diagram to see where the fuel pump feed comes from.

PS Usually either the relay is kaput or the wiring to it is green and corroded á la mini fuse box.

ok cool, ill take a look when my haynes manual turns up next week. some people said they're under the steering column though. i can see one which looks a bit burnt at one connection so it could possibly be that one.

ill have a play, atleast i can get it running now, if the worst comes to ill wire it in via an intertia switch and ignition.

Good old Peugeot have a habit of putting electrical stuff wherever they felt like that day, so places I have tracked the tachymetric relay down to before include behind the glovebox, on the bulkhead, next to the ecu, and on the fuse board! Hence I said "usually" its on the bulkhead!!!!!!!!!!

They also have a nice habit of using green wire for pretty much everything. If you've never messed with Pug electrics before count yourself lucky!

It could be the ECU, but unlikely. Golf GTi's seem very prone to the ECU's getting "spiked" but the 205's seem fairly resilient to it.

I have a mate with a stack of 205 ECU's in his garage so let me know if you get stuck.

Ok mate cheers. Il let you know. going to hunt down one of these relays and go from there. not sure if my local scrappy is open tomorrow or not though.

good job i dont need it till a week monday!

Yeah noticed a lot of green wires........

Hoping i wont have to mess much with them at all really!

Im guessing the relay must have been on its way out and when jumping it off when it switched with high voltage it kind of goosed it!

Now why didnt i get something new and reliable as a daily driver *happy*
