I got a ad in the wanted section with a photo of my old one

Someone as said it looks like it was done for balancing but I don't think they would do this to the base surely

What do you mean chance? Iv had a few t3s apart ans the compressor wheels are always ballenced in this way in my experience

My current turbo had the same cut out in the compressor wheel. Always assumed it was some forms of mod.

Blow air into the oil feed and block the oil return, if a serious amount of air comes out that hole then maybe a rebuild is in order, i say serious amount because if the bearings are.dry oil will escape anyway

But in general if the bearings dont have alot of play up/down and in/out i would bolt it on

It certainly looks like balancing.

That's why I asked for a photo on your "wanted" post, sorry, only just seen the photo.

It's poorly done, on most of the OEM ones I've had apart, and a brand new wheel I bought, the circular cutout is in the back face of the wheel only, ie, doesn't come through to the front giving you the view you have of the housing behind.
But I have seen reconditioned ones that have been balanced like yours.

In terms of performance the airflow there at the very outer edge of the wheel is pretty much 99% radial so the cutout will make sod all difference.

Are there any balancing cutouts on the boss of the wheel, that will say whether it's been balanced properly or not (can't see any in your picture but the photo is one side only).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I have just rebuilt the turbo with new bearings and oil seal kit and only noticed when I put it back together, so I think I will just put it back together then thanks all for your help.
