So the rules as I understand them are as follows, if you are welding a cage in it should have a spreader plate on the inside of the car. If it is being bolted in, it needs a plate each side.

So what about if I bolt the cage to a welded in plate? Can I get away with a single internal plate? I cannot see the benefit of a second plate welded to the outside, the bolts cannot rip through the floor as they would have to pull through the internal plate also which will be seam welded to the floor.

The car is not being built into any msa standards or anything, just road use.

Your thoughts?

Yes, as far as im aware you weld the plates inside then bolt the cage to them.

If your just bolting then the plates go on the outside

There is an advantage to fitting the outer plate, which is that it gives you a handy place to jack the car up without damaging anything.

Good point Tom

If the plates and cage were just bolted I would have thought they should go either side to prevent punch through on a roll over.

I plan to weld the plates in on the floor and up the inner sill to improve strength, will hopefully get it done soon and some pics up.
