This might be a stupid question, but as I'm new to the A series I though I'd ask. I have been offered a gearbox from a 998A+, and was wondering if it would fit my 1293 A+ turbo engine? I know the diff will not be man enough but what about the rest of it?

It will physically fit, but if you put any power through a used and unknown standard box it will only end in tears and ££££££

Ok cool. But the casing will be ok? I have no box at all just now so looking for a starting point.

Yeah, the casing will be fine. You might be lucky and get a more desirable final drive. Always worth having a few donor boxes for synchro hubs, baulk rings etc

Depends on gear ratios and wheel size. Have a look at guess works ratio calculator once you have picked your gear set.

STRIP IT before you use it.
I just made the mistake of not doing it and a diff bearing ball found is way through the gears !
the plastic cages in the bearings were broken. Now the new bearings seem to be steel caged.

Ok thanks. I was going to strip the box to replace the bearings anyway. I would like to put sc gears in but funds don't allow me to do that just now. Is there a set of gears that I should fit just now to get me on the road with out costing 400 odd pound.

ill be the smart arse and say that there was one model 998 gearbox which catches the crank

which one & year i cant remember but there was a post on TMF 2/3 years ago on it

the likely hood of it being yours is slim but worth a check

Use the standard gears, but replace all the bearings etc. Check the gears very carefully for wear. It might take a few boxes to get a good combination of parts to make one usable unit.

Also if i remember the bearing in the transfer case for the input gear is smaller than on the A+ 1275 item. Worth a mention

Wrong. They are all the same. The turbo bearing is bigger, but 998 & 1275 N/A are the same.

That's true I have one of those gearboxes, still can't tell you the year because I bought the engine and box from a mate but if there is any markings on the casing that any one knows about I can check it out. Alan

I think Mr Joshu is referring to the idler gear bearings in the side of the gearbox and transer casing - they are smaller on a pre-A plus (whatever capacity).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

I've also herd it can be ground away to make it clear the crank, don't know how successful that is or if its true.
