Well as I am starting again and my gearbox is in need of a rebuild I have been looking at what I have sat about.

So how can I tell if I have a good case or not? as I would like a good starting point.

Simon.

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

The lightest one in your stash with all good threads - obviously only 3 bolt holes in the centre web and one that doesnt have horrible casting across the top of the centre web too. Check the input bearing hole is not worn

I seriously doubt it!

That's it mate, most of the threads are fucked in my box at the min.

And if you remember me saying at Avon I was not sure what it was well it turns out that its a Jack Knight Box lol. so I think I will look after it lol. So I think its rebuild time.

Make sure you grind off all of the casting marks too, as that'll help relieve any high stress areas. You only reasilse how bad they are, when you start to try and remove them! Lol

Ok I have found one that looks the best from my stash, so am I just cleaning it up where I marked?

Just anything that is not smooth really mate. If it has a rough edge it can crack

I seriously doubt it!

from the casting, basically two bits of metal pressed together
as appose to forging which is a single complete piece

Chalkie, a good analagy is - when you polish your car and have a roll of mutton cloth it is difficult to tear a bit off but if you put a small cut in it you can tear it easier, its the same with a casting - if it has a rough edge it can crack from there but if you smooth it off there is nowhere for a crack to start

I seriously doubt it!

with a smooth edge you spread the stresses in lots of other places making it harder to crack instead of in one perticular place if it is sharp

What are the casting numbers?
They both look like 4 bolt retainer boxes, so neither is great for performance builds.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
