Hi,

I've got an exhaust blow which needs sorting, it stinks of fumes inside the car when driving. It's from under the bonnet somewhere. All I can find is a small hole in the manifold. Not sure if it's part of the casting as it's above one of the turbo studs? Can anyone help please?

Thanks, James

I doubt this is your problem. I think it's just where the drilling for the stud.

With the car running. Hold a bit of hose to the hole with the other end in your ear. You'll soon be able to tell.

As per oneeye, that's just where a normally blind threaded hole has broken through slightly (all castings vary in thickness).

If it was in any way connected to the inside of the manifold it would be all black with carbon.

Your leak, I'm afraid, is somewhere else.

Ok thanks guys. I've nipped the downpipe clamp and manifold nut, all went up a little. There is signs of a small leak from the centre exhaust port under the inlet manifold. When nipping the nuts one of the crappy brass nut thread stripped :(. Think it might be an idea to buy a new manifold gasket and a couple of spare nuts tomorrow at mitp.

You can see in the pic the bottom part of the inlet manifold looks black / carboned up also

Just thought I'd say I've had a metro manifold that had a hole in the same place
When it's off the car it's clear as day

Very thin, extreme heat and 30 odd years old will happen lol

Is the manifold face flat?

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

That "hole" is not the cause of the problem.

If you think you can hear a leak, but not see it, use a piece of hose as a stethoscope to listen to different areas. Might make it easier to identify.

But you do have at least one broken stud where the w/g section bolts to the turbine housing.

generally speaking, any leak pre turbo will be a sharp ticking noise. After the turbo would be more of a chuffing sound

Well spotted Stevie - that could easily cause a leak between the turbine and wastegate housings and hence the carbon on the block below the centre exhaust port.

A mate sells longer manifold studs and double length brass nuts if you think it may help.
