Hi everyone, new to this forum, but have been on others for a while!
Anyway, here's the story! I live in Cyprus.
I have a stock 9.75:1 compression 1.3 metro engine right now.
I also have access to an unknown condition a series 998 with dished pistons, pre '74. For free.
I can also get a 998 with 19k miles in mint condition with mint gearbox for around 200-250 quid.
My friend in england can supply me with a turbo unit (unknown condition but apparently its fine), turbo manifold, turbo carb, i can get a fuel pump too. I can tap the fuel tank for the return myself and I'll find a place to order a fuel pressure regulator too. he can give this to me rather cheap which is why i decided to do this...
I want to turbo my 1275, or maybe a 998, without changing any pistons, or boring. I can get a MG head around here (will do that even if I'm not going turbo), and was told this will be fine.
I'm looking for no more than 90-95 horsepower, and do not want a race engine that will be abused.
I was told I can use the 1275 engine, with its current compression, and just run around 5psi boost.
Basically I want your opinion about what I should do, how hard/easy it is, etc. I'm really rather new to the turbo world, and want a small (10ish horsepower) increase from my engine and this way seems to be the cheapest as I can get the turbo pretty cheap!
If I can get the turbo parts even cheaper, then i'll probably do it anyway to the 998 since that one is free and if something goes wrong with the engine, i couldn't really care much!
Also, my friend told me that a turbo carb is much harder to set up. Why is this? There aren't any proper rolling roads here in Cyprus where I could take the car, so I'd be setting up the carb myself using an oxygen sensor and air/fuel ration gauge. I don't see why this wouldn't work, and i'd leave it a tidbit on the rich side to be safe!
I really hope I figure out a way how to run this turbo, because that would be great!
