Just fitted orig Metro turbo to my 1274,Built engine with low comp pistons .Starts up and sounds great revs up ok stood still, drive the car and it will not rev , seems like it will not boost have just got a new fuel reg will try it in the next few days. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received thanks Paul

Welcome to TM !!, a common over site is the plenum to carb gasket, often they dont have all the holes cut out and only work one way round ( i think we have all done it at one point :) )

You need to do the basics.

Check fuel pressure
Check timing
Check oil in dash pot
Ensure hole is in plenum gasket
Check ignition timing
Check part throttle lean off pipe is not split
Try blocking above pipe at both ends
Correct needle BDD
Etc

Does it backfire through the carb when this happens?

No it does not backfire at all it just does nothing let your foot of throttle and it runs on idle or a few revs ok
