For a few years I've been using a standard metro turbo flexible inlet hose. However, it keeps getting damaged by the bottom radiator hose and collapsing so as the car is in bits I think it's time for a change. I think Avonbar could sell me one for about ?50 which they claim is 'uncrushable'. But this seems a lot of money.

So, how has anyone else arranged their air filter etc?

And, does anyone else sell a suitable inlet hose?

Cheers

Wil

hi,

i use the mini speed uncrushable pipe, i dare say its exactly the same pipe as Avonbar, havnt had mine running on the road yet so i dont know if it will get damage, im sure there are sum pics on here i have posted of my layout

hi,
im using the avonbar uncrusible pipe and one of there air filters and run it over the top of the thermostat ive wrapped some heat cloth around where it touches the rocker cover, the air filter dangles over the alternator.
it is expensive but very uncrusible

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Im using the minispeed stuff, it does wear through quite quickly though. Mine just rubbed on the rocker cover and the wire soon came through. I think a better (and potentially cheaper) way to do it is with rubber/silicon hose and some nice stainless tubing of the right OD/ID.

It will be much better. Im just going to have a 90 degree elbow off the turbo the sit the filter at the back againsnt the bulkhead.

Im guessing when running a turbo that the actual air temp at the intake doesnt make that much of a difference (compared to N/A) so it will be ok at the back.

Ian - you couldn't be further from the truth about air temps and filter location...

Take this (very simple) example.

Ambient air temp 20 degrees C.
Compressed (and heated) via the compressor turbine to 100degrees C Typical value for a T2 at 12psi.
So, the increase was 5 times the intake temperature.
Now, if your ambient temperature was 30 degrees, ie from the back of the engine bay, then the temperature leaving the compressor housing would be 150 degrees...

The colder the air entering the compressor housing, the lower (by the multiplication factor) the air leaving the compressor housing.

Sorry TurboDave but I think you've got it a bit wrong there. If you compress air by a certain amount it will increase in temperature by a certain amount.

So, if you compressed air at 20deg to 12psi it would increase in temperature to (say) 90deg and if you started at 30deg it would end up at 100deg.

However, I would agree getting air into the engine at the coolest possible temperature is always a good thing, even more so if you are running high-boost close to detonation.

i dont understand all these figures and formulers but i do know could air is best( thats y people fit intercooolers and water injection innit) and turbos get bloody hot at the bulkhead.
also is it not better to have the filter at the front to make sure enough gets in

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
