hi all a freind has just phoned he has a 998cc N/A mini stage 1 kit fitted and he says its pinking at higher revs.

Im tempted to say fueling out after the stage 1 kit was fitted but how do i set fueling on an hif38 i remember the old SU had a little plunger underneath to raise the dash pot and help set fueling but how do you do it on a hif carb. Also any easy way of checking timing on the dizzy and getting it right.

Thanks in advance

not sure if the hif38n has a tickler, best way to check timing is with a strobe gun with the vacuum disconnected. off my head i believe its about 8 degrees for a 998.

where in wigan are you, only local if you need a timing gun.

What the mind can conceive the mini can achieve
MITP 2012 17.01 seconds 1/4 mile against "The Don"
MITP 2013 16.83 seconds 1/4 mile

There's an adjustment screw on the bottom back of the carb, about 10 oclock if you're looking from the front to adjust the jet up and down. It's recessed and you'll need a stubby screwdriver to get in to it.

Would you not expect to need a different needle?

the old carbs used to have a blipper to richen out and help guide setup my question was if the hif has such a device. As regards needle i think it has had one done.

It doesn't.

Out of curiosity how do you use this to set the fuelling, or is this just to get it set at idle and then presume the new needle is correct?

It's just to set idle mixture assuming it's the correct needle.

Yep, if its pinking at high revs then the lift pin (if it had one) wouldn't help.
