Hi there people,
Is there anything you can do to get rid of the group a block problem? As gaskets now are impossible to get hold of?

I've seen maybe to skim them off but what about push rods, etc?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

after market cams have the base circle grond smaller so the push rods are probably not going to be an issue.... or you could use 998 ones.

pistons could be topped a bit to suit,

Get a piece of stainless the same thickness as the recess water/laser cut to drop into the recess.
The outer shape would resemble the outer profile of the audi badge, and have the holes in the middle aligned with the bores - if you can imagine it.

I'd do this before skimming any day of the week.

Get a company like Real Steel to make a gasket?

I seriously doubt it!

Right okay, who can do that sort of machining - effectively building the block back up?

The depth for the fire ring to sit in is 0.027" to 0.029".

I would contact Mike Tanski Ferriday Engineering, they are specialists in head gaskets, I am quite sure they could provide a 2 piece gasket with a thick copper fire ring to take up the group A machining in the top of the block. This is what I will do if it ever comes to it, my engine has the group A gasket but I am also lucky enough to have a brand new spare on the shelf.

I contacted Ferriday ages ago about this, & helpful as he was, he said he couldn't help.

Moss still list the gaskets as in stock, although it may be a lie....

The pistons sit lower than the fire ring at tdc anyway don't they so if it was to be skimmed the pistons would need any machining would they?
Also ill look into that Tom sounds a good idea. As for the 998 cams would that give enough for the rockers?

As far as I know I bought the last one Moss had on the shelf about 18months ago. When I tried to order more they said they had none left.

No moss has none emailed the other day, and oh right so seems the most viable option is to do the skim?

Skim and fit a cometic head gasket. You can get them up to 0.140 thou and there not too expensive.

Can you not just use a different block !!

There neasy to get hold of, and the cost of a re bore isn't the earth , so if yo can swap it all over yourself then it may work out cheaper !!

Great shout! It's a 1293! Won't be any trouble with crank bearings either cause the seats are the same! Brilliant
