i have read the specialist components guide on how to do the conversion but with the engine build in the book they dont dry deck it and was just wondering when dry decking this head do you block the water channels in the head face aswell?

cheers

Yep, block both the head and block.

All the holes on the head are welded up, then faced flat.

I did because the guy doing it used the wrong rods and didn't know what he was doing. Lol

I took it to someone else and he welded it up fine. It's also away at the moment with the guy that welded my box to have the crack welded up again as that had pin holes in it (welded by guy that didn't know what he was doing).

Welding ally castings is fine, they just require the right rods and pre heating is a must.

Did it need 5% silicone or 5% magnesium rods?

I seriously doubt it!

I'm not too sure what was used on this tbh. But I'll speak to the guy that's doing the welding now, as to what he's using.

I've got 5% silicon rods and I've welded the lugs onto my box and welded up my transfer housing without any cracking issues, and it's the same type of rods we use at work for castings.

Obviously I've never used the original welder since, but it was either the wrong rods being used, or probably more likely the fact that he didn't pre heat it at all.

I welded a couple of pin holes on the head and they just cracked, I then pre heated it up for several hours welded them up again, and kept it heated and left to cool together and no cracks. But my boss was asking questions why we've used so much gas on the heater, in summer, so I thought its best not to try my luck again. Lol

I spoke to the guy that's welding my head today. He's managed to reweld the cracks, and said he used silicon rods. He told me he always uses silicon rods on castings unless they're being anodised. Silicon rods leave a black finish where it's been welded, mag rods anodise well apparently.
