Hi chaps.

I was just practicing my welding a bit, and I'd love some help if pos.

Firstly, I seem to be able to do two types of bad weld. Firstly, the weld starts OK, penetrates OK, and after 1-1.5cm I blow a hole through the metal. This seems to happen no matter what metal I try on (0.6-1.6mm thick) or the settings of the welder (tried altering gas, speed and power). I started welding with the manual's recommended settings and then changed things from there.

If I manage to not blow a hole, then I get a crap non-penetrated blobby mess on top.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or do I need to just watch more videos on welding and practice more?

Attached a few pics - plug holes, crappy weld and a weird box thing I tried that was not totally wank in the end.

Cheers,
Al

I think you need a bit more power or less feed speed in pictures 3 and 5

Firstly turn down the gas flow so you can just hear it coming through.

Set the wire feed and temperature to where you managed to start ok and only weld 1/2" then stop for a few seconds and repeat all the way along.

When you get better at that start longer runs but you should be looking at the weld pool all the time and adjusting your rate of travel to keep it the same size - so getting faster as you go along the work piece.

On plug welds start in the middle of the hole and work out in a spiral or leave it to build up on its own until the hole is filled.

Biggest tip is rest your right hand (if thats the hand you hold the torch in) on your left hand to give best control

I seriously doubt it!

It is a subject hard to describe and much easier to show.
When are you next coming up here? When you do, bring your welder with you and we'll have a few hours in the garage.

Yeah I do that, much easier.

Thanks for all the other tips - will try them out.

Thanks for the offer Tom!
