prise back the fin flange thingys holding the end cap on and take it out...makes them flow better!

BTW it is a flap that stops the air from routing through the core to reduce lag(EVIDENTLY) when the charge temp is cool enough.

Junk..bin the flappy thing!

Yes you are right, they have a thermostate that allows the air to flow straight in and out the end cap of the intercooler, and closes when the air gets to a certain temperature so it will then pass through the core. I brought my R5 intercooler with this mod allready carried out but its simply a job of bending the alloy tabs so the end cap can be removed, remove the thermostate and fit a blanking plate in. Mine has been riveted in place, they apparantly flow better once this mod has been done! Also a good idea to strap the intercooler as they are know to blow apart, especially as bending the retaining tabs will weaken them a tad. A huge jubillee clip or similar will help to hold it in one piece.

Next prob,it is too tall.Mk 1 metty has a higher slam panel than a mk 2 metty

Will it still be efficantish(<new word) if I put a flat plate on the opposite end to the pipes instead of the plastic bulge bit

For sure - don't just take it out mind, or air will take the easy route and just by-pass the core!

I'd still reckon the series2 escort intercooler would be an easier fit next to the metro rad.
