I have just built up the transfer casing and checked the play in the idler gear.

bits I have used,

A+ gearbox & transfer case
Genuine gasket from minispares
two 0.135" shims
A+ gear.
Torqued up nicely.

And I've got 0.018" bugger.

What to do?

larger shims? 0.139" is the largest I've found

thinner gasket? if so, where from? and will it make up 0.018"?

machine the mating face 0.018"?

buy another one?

I've also noticed, on the transfer case, there is a grove and burr made where the idler shim has run round and eaten the case.

Cheers for any help,

Matt

If the transfer case has worn, I'd be tempted to try another one.

as above if not minispares north have various over sizes ask for Richard,
if not have one made ? top limit or an tad more on a Hard performance engine is no worries on top limits above, around 0.005" is acceptable, IMO
gaskets varies in thickness so try a few

hope this helps you Mathew *smiley*

One option open to you is to have the casing flycut but surely there is a problem if you cannot get the idler clearance set with the standard available thicknesses of over size thrust washers?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Thanks Chaps,

I'll try minispares for some over size ones, else I'll have to dig out the one I got from adcyorka little while ago.

would fly cutting make the nose bearing on the mainshaft a little tight?

It will be fine with the amount you need to take off.
