I've been thinking about building a 998 turbo engine for going in a road legal hillclimbing car. The car doesn't have to be stupid fast but it would be nice to have it drivable for getting to events. The ecoboost 1.0 that ford does has got me wondering, does anybody know anything about the suitability of the turbo from it?

I can't find any specs but if the ford engine is 1.0 and my engine is 1.0 then surely it'd be a good match? (packaging issues may be an issue)

I've been looking at this:

Your logic is sound. These are a VNT by the look of the actuator. The diesel VNTs were hard to stop making massive boost spikes and limiting the boost. As this is for a petrol engine it may be more controlable.

There's only one way to find out!

Compressor outlet looks weird too.

I Had a Peek actually and it acctually looks like i would work well. it is a more modern design which spool faster but it will not give all that much boost at top end since you are looking at a daily driver it might be ok, but like someone quotes, "strap it on and see if it works." Im curious now but i have a GT17 in the mail. Im not entirle sure but if your on the North american side of the world the v6 eco boost uses Borg warner equivalant of the Garret 15 so that might be an option as well if you can find a f-150 (only use one of the twin turbos 2 would be overkill) lolz

ahh I'm tempted now, this turbo makes 125bhp on ford's 1.0 engine. They ran a car with 170bhp with the same engine, in fact they ran it at 220bhp as well I think. However, I cannot find out if they ran a bigger turbo, I'm assuming they did. I'm really tempted to just buy one, they're all low mileage so should be ok.

Wil, this is for the car I'm wanting to hillclimb in. I've decieded not to go for mod prod in the first year or so but rather the Roadgoing Series Production Cars class. That way I can figure out if the whole thing is for me without spending too much cash. I'm going to Harewood on Sunday with a friend who wants to share my car.

Reet, sending an offer in for the turbo. I'll update when I get it.

as above would be good to get a flow map for it but I suspect that ford will keep this close to their hearts for now at least,........... strap it on is what I say also ........*Clapping**happy*

could be the new gt17

I'm going to be using the 12g940 you did for my 1300 Steve, do you know anyone who could pocket a 998 block for me?

Not that I've sourced a 998 yet, plenty of 1275s in the cellar but I gave away all my 998s.. doh!

Cheers Steve, I will do when I'm a little closer. I've gone and bought it now and I've no idea at all how to control the vnt lol. Oh well, guess it'll be fun working it out.

I can guarantee the turbocharger that is rated for the 120hp engine is NOT the same turbo that made 220hp...

The td025-06 used on the clio tce's is tiney and there are people running just under 150bhp, spools up fast and a reasonable torque band on it, my clio revs to 6500, running standard 0.6bar makes 101bhp, remap and bigger injectors with 0.8bar is 130bhp, same as before and no cat makes 138bhp, 1bar remap injectors no cat makes 149 iirc all with standard turbo.,

Well I think I've found a way to control the VNT with a programmable ECU. Anyone for boost at 1400rpm? I'll make a build thread when I get sorted out.

What about the RHF3 on the 500 Abarth. Spools fast makes 160 on a 1400cc motor.

Turbo suitability and range of operation has really come a long way in the last few years. Hardly surprising as turbos are now an efficiency item rather than a power item on most cars.

Yeah I've often thought about those, if I was keeping my 1275 I'd consider them. I think we're in for a real good time as everyone goes turbocharged small capacity. If I can get the vnt working well it should offer unrivalled drivability. Or at least I'm hoping. Went to harewood on Sunday, my friend and I agreed it has to be done. Now I have to save up for a racing suit and helmet. Girlfriend is not happy lol.

Well I have the turbo, it's not a VNT.

The actuator closes a valve in the turbine side that bypasses the turbine. I'm guessing this stops the turbo making about a million psi. Getting the turbo in the car may be a problem but I don't have the time at the minute to check it out.

This things TINY. the compressor wheel is 38mm.
