it turns out that my cheapy £20 dump valve has died, the diaphram has split, I bought it in 1996, I thought it would have lasted longer!

Thanks for the offer of a turbo neil, but I'm ok

Iain, if I go for a piston type, where do get the different spec rubber seals from?

I know one of them your not supposed to handle after they've been warm. Something i got told AFTER id been playing with some the other week!

Anywhere that sells o-rings i guess. let me know what size first though and ill see what we've got kicking about at work. best get myself some too *happy*

Ive got a forge Grp A DV, works really nicely, its the same as my le mans grp A one.

i think its viton ones you need definitely,

as for handling, touching any o-rings after they have been over-temped is seriously dangerous

i always cut them off with a knife and dispose straight into the bin

is it bad for you, (ie health) or bad for the o rings?

its standard fitting practice on gas turbines not to touch o-rings etc just incase they have been over-temped

the ones i've come across when over-temped let off a pretty nasty gas which can be poisonous in enclosed spaces, but when its mixed with water it turns into a nasty acid when goes soaks straight through your skin and reaks havoc with your body and bones!! So if there's been an engine fire, putting it out with some water is not a good idea!!

i think viton seals are temp rated around 200 deg C so worth bearing in mind!

I think its something to do with the rubber becoming carceinogenic (sp?), e.g. can cause cancer......so definately not a good idea.

However, my understanding of it, is that the change in composition into the dangerous form only happens if "certain" types of rubber habve been on fire. Over temp can maybe cause it too, but I thought it was only when they have been on fire that they are REALLY bad for you......

fluoroelastomers turn into a highly corrosive acid - Hydrofluoric Acid which is virtually impossible to remove from the skin...

it rots your bones from the inside... the only way to stop it is IF you catch it early enough you are given MASSIVE shots of calcium to counter the acid..

Ones the bones rotten amputation is about your only choice!!

Burn out cars - lip seals such as the rear crank seal.

Basically you burn the plastic and it turns into a soft gooy sticky substance.

Oh and by the way normal rubber gloves don't stop it getting through to your skin!!!
