hey guys , im looking at buying a complete metro turbo setup if tis at the right prce , now i was wondering what sort of power can be run through a standard 1275 engine or even a thou with the cr lowered ? at the mini i own a mini and a metro and pinched the metro engine and built a fast road 1275 for the mini , and stuck the tired 998 in the metro as a daily xD(it would stay a daily with a turbo on so wouldnt be looking to run loads through it) , now this setup comes with the metro exhaust so i thought if i get it ,it would be rude not to turbo the metro while i build an turbo engine for the mini but i dont fancy strapping it all to the engine thats in, i would prefer buy a half decent engine and chuck that in , it comes with a t3 that is to big for a thou isnt it ? so would a gt17 be a better alternative and does it fit on standard manifolds ? or would i be better trying to get a 1275 and run the t3 on it ?

thanks guys

ollie

i had a read through that at first , but it doesnt really say anything about the power its making after wards also anything about the gt17 on a standard manifold

It made a smidge under between 80 and 100bananas.

the GT17 can be made to fit the MG Turbo manifold. Its the same fitting as the T2. however with the standard manifold it does stick out a bit. It may be tight in the metro.

All that said i would not be using a GT17 on a standard 998 engine. It is total overkill and will be a pig to drive.

Your best bet is probably something like a GT15. This will give you a good power spread, boost early and make 100 bananas easy.

Have a search for the thread on out metro van. Standard turbo pistons, totalseal rings, phase 2 cam and a very well ported big valve head gave over 200 bananas with a gt17 turbo. It just fitted in the metro engine bay with the turbo notched to fit the standard t3 manifold. If I was doing it again I would have notched the subframe as everything was very very tight down the back.

ahh so the gt17 is better suited to a standard 1275 ? it does come with a t3 but ive been lead to believe that its old tech now and doesnt come on boost until higher up in the rev range ? or will the t3 be alright as a aily drive on a 1275 ?

cheers for the replys Ben

Yes the GT17 is great on a 1275. They work well on the 998 in a race application, but on the road it would be tedious after the initial grinning.

I slagged the T3 off for years as a shit old lump. But that was after my experience of it on a 998. Now I have driven a 1275 with a T3 it's not as bad as I thought it might be.

It's not great, but livable with for daily use.

When the van had a t3 and a n/a mg metro cam it was a nice fast drive on about 12psi. We ruined it by fucking about with other turbos and cams, light weight stuff etc. If we had left well enough alone, chances are we would still have it...

the t3 is an ancient unit but it still works! I have run different spec t3s on both of my turbo engines, and they have been very drivable and made very good power for the boost.

if you are looking to do a turbo transplant I would keep it simple. the t3 will bolt straight on without problems, ie having to sort different manifolds and downpipes.

I have read only good things about the gt series turbos, but at present I have no urge to change from my hybrid t3. the motor pulls like a train as it is...
