Hi Guys,

I am looking to buy a rivet gun. I need to rivet a couple of steel sheets together (1-2mm thick) and have never used one before.

Can anyone recommend a decent make/model? They don't seem to be very expensive but I don't want one that doesn't work properly or falls apart after next to no time.

Any guidance/advice would be much appreciated.

Mark

to be honest, the one I use is one of the cheaper ones and haven't had any issues for the rare times it used.

I know where your coming from though as I usually want to buy decent quality stuff

I had a load of riveting to do while making a set of indutrial doors, so I bought a Spear & Jackson lazy-tong riveter. As long as you have the space available to wield it, it make riveting a doddle.

I admit it is a bit of overkill, but I do tend to do that with tools...

I have a cheap draper one, works perfectly, but after using a hydraulic/pneumatic rivet gun at work, i want one, but then I'd use it once in a blue moon so isn't really worth buying for me (along with finding space to store it, which i don't have!)

I was thinking of getting one like this but they all seem to be pretty similar....

They all seem to be able to do 2.4, 3.2, 4.0 and 4.8mm alu blind rivets and from what I have been reading should also be able to manage 4mm steel rivets. In the past I have riveted the wheel arches on with something similar which I borrowed from a mate.

There is a MASSIVE difference between aluminium and steel rivets when you are using a small handheld gun.

I helped a friend skin a GT40 chassis with steel rivets, and there is absolutely no way we would have managed it with a normal rivet gun. A lazy-tong would have helped, but pneumatic was the only sensible way to do it.

Depending on how many steel rivets you have to do, consider gettign something a bit more manly for the job.

as far as pneumatic tools go, desoutter, atlas copco, or chicago pneumatic (cp) are the names to buy. they are pretty much the standard that most aviation fitters use. you can pick them up on ebay for not a massive amount. dont forget you will need the appropriate rivet snaps too for them.
