The big problem (and I have shipped a lot of stuff from here to UK) is that there is only ONE space to put the value of the item on the shipping forms.

I can't comment on importing, I've allway got stung for the duty/VAT/handling charges etc on virtually everything from the USA (much better luck with AUS or Canada) BUT.... sending some stuff out of the UK to the USA to a member on this forum, he enlisted the help of another forum member who was USAF based at Mildenhall and it went via the USAF overseas staff postage system (or whatever they call it) at no cost.
Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

The big problem (and I have shipped a lot of stuff from here to UK) is that there is only ONE space to put the value of the item on the shipping forms. So if you want me to put $35 value on your $500 swinging shackle, I will do that. But if it goes missing in the post, then you will get back your $35, but not your swinging shackle, nor the $60 you paid for shipping.... It seems that the minimum amount that the UK carriers seem to start caring about duty, is anything over 30 quid. Finally - as someone mentioned; the exchange rate is around 1.63 now, and has been somewhere around 1.6 for the past year. When it was 1.9 or even 2.0 - this made stuff from the US very cost effective, along with the shipping. From my experience, marking as a "gift" or "return" makes little to no difference in getting stung on duty. The best seems to be "tractor tires" or "used tractor part" or "decorative plate for household use" (for my alloy plates). Shipping charges have also increased by about 50% over the past 7 years; It used to cost just 10.50usd to ship the alloy plates from USA to UK - now it is over $18usd. That, along with the exchange rates, is why I don't sell them anymore. Others may have different opinions, but these are my own experiences. Hope it helps, and if you really need a contact, I can try to help. I always make sure when I help folks out with USA>UK shipping, that I will do exactly what they want, but have no responsibility for what happens after it leaves my hands. Insured value and declared value are not supposed to be treated as the same though. And you are correct, gift etc makes no difference. I'm baffled as to why people think it should. If the piece has value, then apart from a small number of exceptions, then it is liable for duty, gift or not. It used to be anything over £18 was liable, although that may have been lifted in recent years. And dont forget, as crazy as it sounds, duty is chargeable not only on the value of the goods, but postage costs too !! Only with the UK's criminal taxation system can they tax you in such a way !!! Just checked rates there, they claim 1.59 at the minute. Hopefully it will rise to 1.65, as need to buy some stuff soon. 9.85 @ 145mph

I thought i got away with it on my last purchase...until an invoice came through the post for the tax a couple of months later In a nutshell. Import duty varies with goods, and is generally fairly low. Car parts typically 4% or so. VAT at 20% is then liable on declared value including shipping costs. USPS will end up in the UK via Parcel Force. They are usually incredibly slow, and when they arrive at this end. Parcel Force will usually charge £13.50 for the pleasure of delaying the goods, and then any duty bill on top of that Duty must be paid before they will hand over the goods to you. I would generally try and avoid USPS when possible. Any saving you think you're getting is offset by unbelievably slow delivery times, plus Parcel Forces handling charge at this end. DHL. Only used once or twice, goods arrive, they send the duty bill later. FedEx, always superb service. As above, goods usually arrive and they send the duty bill later. Although I think on a couple of occasions, the above pair have phoned me to ask for payment before they would deliver. UPS. Usually decent service. They do not hand over any goods until duty is paid. I think they charge a handling fee too...cant remember Another thing to note for those who wont hand over goods until duty is paid. Not usually a big deal. However, if there is a dispute over the duty they want, you're screwed in these cases. You have to pay up front then try and fight your case. I was fortunate one time with UPS who kept calculating duty based on the US$ instead of converting this to ££ Fortunate that the driver delivered the goods without requesting the payment. This dispute went on for 6 months, with them calculating the duty wrong about 10 times !!! The last time they did manage to get it right, then for some unknown reason just doubled their final total again. They even wrote out all their calculations. It truly defied belief how incompetent they could be. Edited by stevieturbo on 16th Oct, 2013. 9.85 @ 145mph

The only way to get round this problem is to have a friend/relative bring items with them when they come to visit.

Last thing I shipped was some tyres (tires?) for Carl. I didn't follow up to see if he paid duty on them. Perhaps he'll comment. On 17th Nov, 2014 Tom Fenton said:
