Smoke on overrun is typically worn valve stem seals.

Is it blue smoke?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

if the fueling checks out OK???

then the problem will lie with worn bores and ring if all else checks out!

the valve guides like tom says are a problem as well!

But in my experience its 90%+....... the bores & rings especially if its blue smoke!

i bet the engines done starship miles & had some wellie bob as well!!!!*wink**frown*

do a compresion test to see whats what*wink*

a leak down test "WILL REVEAL ALL"!*happy**frown*

100% valves/guides seals. If it does it on overrun, it's always the guides.
Worn rings and bores give blue smoke on full throttle.

If it smokes on idle, jack the front of the car up to see if it's the guides or not (i think)??

i would be inclined to disagree vegard.
Too much emphasis is devoted to valve guide wear! buddy.

in my book and many others!..................

who have had over 30 years experience with the A series engine and many other motors

90+% its the bores & ring blow by

Smoke on overrun is usually valve guides, as the vacuum pulls oil down through the worn guides or stem seals.

Smoke on acceleration is more likely piston rings!

But I think you have given the answer away- if it has been sat about a while, the stem seal material can sometimes go hard, and hence not seal so well.

Given the mileage you quote, I'd be suprised if it was serious wear ANYWHERE in the engine, my bet is stem seals are not sealing well simply due to OLD AGE rather than anything else.

All i can place the smoke down to is
now you have changed the worn out oil & may be to a thicker viscosity ?

its not passing the rings and maybe! the guides quite so easily

so the engine cant be that badly worn which is great news for you

the water problem if you can find no physical evidence of any external leaks!

then if there is no water to oil or ... oil to water contamination you could have a pending failing head gasket ?

keep your eye on the situation and good luck
