A conversation at work today sparked this - Supposedly cast iron is best and is most commonly used but Strange Engineering make them from forged steel, would steel plate be upto the job for a Mini used on the 1/4 mile only? 7.5" diameter and 5.16"/8mm thick

I seriously doubt it!

Hmmm,

cast Iron is about twice as thermally conductive IIRC.

He's being Americanist, lol disc is what he means ,

and I would say m/s steel sheet plate will be fine ,

but why hot make some alumina disks and have them metal sprayed, Ala the titanium ceramic disks available form red devil racing in the US

What about going back to a drum setup? With aluminium drums shaved down and drilled?

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

Steel discs are used on speedway cars, and they have even more h.p. than Paul!

That's just an example.
Those speedway boys use lots of titanium alloys too - but not for discs.

That would add loads of weight, but we were only talking about whether steel is upto the job - not losing weight

I seriously doubt it!

Are not most motorbike disks stainless? So long as you match the disk material with the friction material it should be fine.

Think about the aluminium disks on the S1 Elise. Never wore out so long as you used the correct MMC pads.

Thinking about this, if its just 1/4 mile you'll prbably be fine with most stuff including ally.

Wilwood's drag stuff are thin and steel as far as I know

I guess a lot will depend how hard you stand on the brakes at the end of any run

For a while, AndyF ran very small brakes up front on his Subaru

post #792, unfortunately a lot of the pics seem to have gone. But those are front brakes.

Its the bolt PCD and ID of existing disks that cause the problem with using them on a Mini

I seriously doubt it!

could you not machine the disk in the middle and use a disk bell? then mount the caliper where required?
