been looking at lsd's obviously there all bloody expensive

the minispares one looks the cheapest but are they any good? there ?150 cheaper than the quaife, and there 4 pin diff seems to be the best

I spent a lot of time looking into the advantages and disadvantages of the ATB (Quaife) and Plate (minispares) diffs before we made a purchase last year.

Different people will give different opinions but here's mine:

The minispares diff is fantastic for race/rally use, in my experience it's not to severe and does a good job. but as a plate diff it will wear and I would suggest it's not good for a road car that is expected to do mileage

The Quaife is a less extreme diff, and to this extent will work better on the road. With no plates it will not wear out either (well it's not designed to wear out).

I would buy the Quaife if I was using road tyres and the Minispares if I was using slicks.

I run the Tran-X plate type, purely because i picked a complete unit up at a very good price.
Machining the case is a simple job, certainly something you can do yourself, took me about an hour.

I'd agree with Wil's comments, however the only thing I would add, is due to the operation of the Quaife ATB diff, it does wear itself out over time. However, this wear rate is a lot, lot slower than a plate type diff, and as long as you were not doing gravel rallying with that diff, where it would be constantly locking and uinlocking, you would never notice. The wear comes from the two spiral gears which rotate and hence move away from each other when the torque on the output shafts is not equal. They move up a shaft until they contact the outer casing, this contact then locks the diff up and gives you the torque back to the wheel that has lost grip.
In operation it is a fantastic diff, no clunking like you get from a plate diff, and the locking action is very smooth, no tugging from the steering wheel etc.

I use a tran-x in mine (same as minispares) it's lethal on the road, but awsome on the track

I was pleasantly surprised by the diff in Jimsters mini... Tons nicer than the salsbury in BIR2 when I took that round a track in early 2004... Just wish Quaifes weren't so expensive.

you can switch the ramp plates over fairly easily apparently and the don't cost much if you not happy with how it feels

i bought my tran-x with a race ramp in (as it was cheap) but i was advised for the rally plate thats more tuned to tarmac work rather than the rally plate thats for loose conditions.

if going for a car mainly for road work i was told that the quaiffe was the only real option

couldn't tell you how it feels though as its just sat tucked away awaiting to be built up

there's more to come yet! lol

seriously though i need to get my shell sorted out in the next 3-4 months if i'm to stand a chance of getting to avon next year, the garage rafters can then breath a sigh of relief when the rest of the parts can be brought down and fitted...
