Over here, Hermes deliveries just seem to be some bloke in his car ?

Dont even see how they can be doing it legally like that.

My local Hermes delivery person is a very nice lady who has never let me down -and she has a lovely smile !

Courier service seems to depend on the quality of the end delivery. all too often someone who is rushing around at about £1.50 per drop trying to make a living.

My lady clearly does it for pin money and does not take on more than she can handle.Like Steve says, she is just someone using her family car.

Our heremes lady is probably in her 50s, very polite and friendly. Uses a car too. Always shows up before 10am. Never had an issue with them.

I guess its down to individual drivers. Our local yodel driver is useless.

Which is my point, it's very unlikely she's even legal to be doing such work in a private car.

That said, never had any issue with stuff coming via them to mine. Most courier companies pay their drivers pittance for what is a nightmare of a job.

I must admit I have never had a problem with them and they are so much cheaper than the royal mail!

Use the search function before buying stuff from me...

stoke on trent

I love hermes, its cheap as bollocks I arranged to get two brand new tyres sent over to me were picked up on friday and arrived today, cost me £4.50.
And my woman (Bernice) will come back if ive forgot to print the label or im not in at the time shes dropping a parcel off.

Its just shocking how much of a price difference there is compared to the robbing bastard post office.

Whilst I agree....a large part probably comes down to the fact they arent doing it fully legally

I recall DHL/Yodel looking for people to do similar sort of work....the money they were offering, it would be impossible to be legal in any respect.

I've been using city link lately. It costs a bit more, but they collect every time, their depot is 5 minutes from my house and 9 times out of 10 they deliver next day even though I pay for a 48 hour service.

You get what you pay for in my experience.

If there is no rush Hermes are Ok and I can drop off my parcel at a shop on my route to/from work.

If I need to get something away quickly I use UPS via Parcel2go which again I can drop off at a different local shop with long opening hours.

Yet again the astound me.. had a little polish guy just turn up with something sent 2 weeks ago, no terminal in hand, I asked why and his friend got it very very busy today he help him. got me to sign a hermes business card on back and write the barcode number on it and sign it so he had proof of delivery, followed him out and he was in a polish registered picasso beat to fook, and it literally had parcels filling the whole interior to the roof lining. Unbelievable.....

I don't have much experience of Hermes so am not defending them, but in what way is their business model not legal?

As long as the delivery people have their cars insured for business use (which doesn't cost a lot extra) then.....?

I do some courier work. My insurance for this in my van is a hefty sum. Then on top I need goods in transit and public liability insurance.

For business use isnt the same as carriage of goods which is usually a lot more expensive etc.

I'd be surprised if any of these places are operating fully legit. I know Yodel did a similar thing a few years ago here, and the pay rates they were offering were diabolical. You'd need to have delivered about 1000 items before you even broke even paying my GIT and liablity insurance, nevermind running a vehicle, paying it's insurance and taking some sort of a wage/tax from it !

It's a bit like many fast food delivery places, although they do make a fair sum. Plenty of them have been caught locally over the past few years not having insurance for what they were doing.

everything I receive has been hermes lately nothing broken so have gave them a try over last few weeks, 18 parcels sent all got there all not smashed the drop off at a shop thing is really handy and prices are good and apparently going to be cheaper again for small stuff. Perhaps they have redeemed themselves...

I needed to send something this week and noticed than in Hermes prohibited list is car parts so if they get lost or broken you cannot claim.

UPS now do the same sort of deal where you drop at a shop (access point) and the prices are competitive, they also insure car parts so i have used them instead now
