Hi Chaps,
I'm gathering parts for a 16v build, and have acquired a mpi engine. I kbow others have used the mpi block for the k conversion but is it made a lot harder? Should i try to swap it for a non mpi block?I've been searching on here and problems seem to be with alternator positioning and oil drains from the head but is there anything else?
Thanks
Andy

In my experience, using the MPi block did nothing to help anything. If anything it made things a little harder. My new block will be an A+ block.

The MPi block will work though. only other downside is that it dribbes oil down the front of the block when you do a filter change.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Thanks Colin, it was your build thread i got the pointers from about the alternator and oil drains.

Did/do you run the knock sensor off the MPI cam on yours colin?

Thanks

Alternator isn't a big deal with the MPI block if you have some hammers drills/saws/files and a bit of alu.

Nice!
Good pic Andy, im comfortable in making up the alternator brackets as if its just a bit fab then its nothing i haven't done before. Im more concerned about the oil drain for the head and turbo (im gonna go for FI ) as theres no nice fuel pump hole to run back to.

Colin drilled the tappet chest covers but I dont know if that location would ultimatley interfere in any way with the turbo or manifold?

Cheers

There is a nice big hole where the cam sensor went. Would be easy enough to make something to screw into/against it.

Just measured my spare block. It's 17mm plus the chamfered edge. Plenty big enough.

At a guess you could run a 3/4" thread into that and put a nice fitting on it.

Brilliant, cheers Andy. As I dont have a block in front of me now does it look like it could be opened up if needed?

You could open it up a bit I think, but a 3/4 UNF fitting straight into that hole should to the job nicely.

I use the original mpi cam sensor. The lobes for it are the only ones left on the shaft *happy*

I take it colin uses it for knock?

However if i do decide to run a knock sensor i guess it could go in the end of the block at the engine steady location like roberts did?

Anyway thanks for the pic as well andy that sorts that one out.

Cheers
Andy

Cam sensor is used for full sequencial injection and ignition. Benefits include being able to start the engine within half an engine cycle, and individual cylinder knock ignition retard. Amongst others, it also improves emissions, but then, not may bother with that on here *tongue*

Edit, the knock sensor is bolted to the top bolt hole of the old ingition coil bracket nearest cylinder 4 and the deck of the block where det occurs
