After melting one of my cast omega pistons I decided for now I'm going to build a 1380 NA engine. Then later I will rebuild the turbo motor. I've just received the hypatec pistons, so i thought I would do a search on here to find if anyone were using them or had trouble with them. I found a thread about possibly using them for turbo use and what the crown thickness was. Someone mentioned using a CT scanner to scan piston to measure.... I just happened to have the pistons in my car and have access to a CT today.

I should have removed the gudgoen pin before scanning so the centre slice image is not great

Cut through the first third

Bad image caused by the gudgoen pin, but the crown thickness can be measured

These pistons are really well priced and maybe they will work for low boost engines?

Any thoughts?

not sure its worth anything but i went away from them as the ones i got have big oil slots in them not good for boost i was told so went and got some GR ones with drilled oil holes

surely someone is using them in a boosted engine ben was but they broke a ringland i think 160hp and 14psi?

I'm using them although, in fairness, they have only seen very limited periods at 0.6bar yet.

See here http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=246578

Back then (it is a while ago) the 73mm and 73.5mm had the drilled holes, it was the "standard" (ie, +020, +040, +060) that had the weaker oil drain slots.

But the design may have changed, your CT scan shows less crown thickness than I physically measured (in the centre).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Thanks for the replies, going to stick with the omegas for my next turbo motor.

i have had them recommended as a good piston for NA. good product at a relatively good price. good silicon content !2-12.5%IIRC - but would think cast omegas would be as good if not better - for low boost (say SC <10) i reckon they would be fine,, but if in doubt i would run to forged omegas... THis is opinion only no real evidence sorry... still would be interested in info differences between forged omegas and accralites now they are under the one ownership/

cant see why they wouldn't be any good. if the fuelling and ignition were set properly, and a suitable level of boost run??

I used standard na metro pistons on my first build. 10 psi, cr 8.6:1, it made good power, 130 bhp, without issues ever.

I only removed this as I built a new bottom end with forged 1380 pistons and better cam.

granted the metro pistons were not ideal, but they did what was required of them and it made for a really nice fast road motor.

cheers, dan
