Hello again gents

I've started to think about what Turbo to use for my 16v turbo project and after doing a bit of a search on here and on the web have got a bit lost as to what is on offer.

Does anybody have/know of any good/simple guides or books where i could learn up on the theory etc? I dont want to just stick something on because someone told me to or because someone has done it before. I would like to understand how/why something is selected.

That being said I would welcome any suggestions (with reasoning) for the following spec:

1293cc
K1100 LT head (thinking of using the standard LT cams)
Will be intercooled
Thinking of a compression ration somewhere around 9:1 (although i will be asking Q's about this undoubtedly in the future)
Likely i will run an Emerald ECU (only because im familiar with them)

I'm aiming for the 180 - 200bhp area, it will be used as a weekend warrior and 2 or 3 track days a year. I would like it to be on boost as early as possible really (say 2000 onward). Im going to build the motor so that it can take revs but would like it to be hitting its peak no later than 6500rpm really.

Am I trying to build the impossible? Any advice greatfully recieved.
Thanks

The technical pages on the Garrett website are a good starting place Andy

Andy, if you want a map for a k1100 turbo on an emrerald let me know. I can also supply emerlad ECU's cheaper than going direct too. www.jimnet.co.uk

Good info thanks chaps will check out all the maps and stuff now...no doubt questions will follow once I have read this stuff.

Jim, that's great, it will prob be early next year before I buy the ECU but if you can do one with a k1100 turbo map as a starting point that will be super.

Thanks

Right according to my calcs I get an airflow of 22.92lb/min and a pressure ratio of 2.19

So from my (poor) understanding of the maps a GT 2554R would be about perfect......does that sound about right? Any idea what hat turbo is off etc?

Id say that woul be good for a min of 200 hp but up in excess of 250+

the gt17 or 2056 would be the better option

I'd say assume a slightly lower VE, say 90%

also pay attention to the effeciency islands on the turbo map, on the GT25 your at 72ish% if you swap to a gt2056 you'll be seeing 79%, this means your intake will be that bit cooler. also the GT2056 is a more available turbo, and will spool sooner.

with the GT25 its going to start coming in a bit later than you want I think, probably getting on for 3k, I think the 2056 will be coming in down nearer 2k.

Right fair do's Joe I had assumed a VE of 97%

Will try re running the calc with a lower figure then. I actually had the Gt2056 as the next on my list as possibly ok.

better to go a little small on the turbo, and crank it up a few psi rather than having it come in too late *wink*

Hi chaps,
Right had another look through the specs and I agree that the Gt2056 does look like the best option.

It looks like it will be the most efficient and also physically smaller to get in front of the standard bulkhead.

Dropping the Ve to 90% doesn't really make much difference and I still get it up near the 78% efficiency.

Just need to find one of the buggers now!

Thanks for the help.....and I've learnt something new!

Been looking on ebay and they all seem to be Gt2056V which have the variable vane system, does this make them unusable or can the variable bit e taken off if needed?

the V will prbably be a pita to control, a lot of them are actuated by vacum rather than boost, also it would make for interesting cruise boost chariteristics... (I know Ive run a VNT lol)

IIRC the TDO4 from the impreza wrx looks a good bet, I think its the 13t commpressor,

also heres another calculator.
