Working on a 998 engine and begining to formulate a plan for the next steps of work to be done. I have the crank out and it definitely needs a re-grind. The journals are heavily grooved so I wonder if the engine was run dry or maybe just terribly maintained.
While the crank is out, I was thinking of wedging it. I've got access to a mill and can probably come up with some solid fixturing. In addition, I have a balancing machine I can use to balance it after the fact.
I'm wondering what the general concensus is on wedging. Reports seem a bit varied. I was planning on using the cutting information from vizard unless anyone has better advice. I don't think it would be too difficult once it is setup on the mill. It would be nice to see some examples of a wedged crank if anyone has done it.

this was a thing for 1275 I think, not really neccacary on a 998 IMO

As long as the effects aren't negative I wouldn't mind having a go at it, necessity aside.
Maybe I just have too much spare time...

What rpm are you planning to turn the engine to? under 7k there is definatlely no point.

That said on a 1275 has does a wedged reduce the roughness of running at all? Or does the small amount of weight off the big end make sod all difference in the scheme of things?

998's in general seems smoother running anyway.

i dont think it could hurt?
i believe the big ends on the rods/crank are over weight for what the are so anything taken from them that lightens those parts is good thing?
if you have the proper tooling to do it id do it so long as your staying clear for the parts that are structural and just lop of the "extra" metiral

i agree that if your not turning the thing its much less affective as the force to amplified by rpm

My engine seems to rev easier with a wedged crank, than it did before.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I doubt the engine will see 7k ever so it may not be needed. I will keep looking into the machining end of things.
Replacement crankshafts are NOT cheap so I don't want to mess it up

Thanks for the info all.
Sounds like it really isn't worth it much at all so I will hold off
