Ok just before you start reading this it's sort of a purge!

As I have said on other pages, I have a fault with my BMW, a mate of mine put it on his little red snap on box, and came up with the fault code of 5e20. So I have been doing a bit of reading up on the net to get the gen up and it always comes back to the ABS system. Then with this info I asked a good friend of mine to ask his brother who is a BMW service manager up North and his reply was "this is a known BMW Fault, the owner only needs to pay £250" so with my findings I set about seeing if I can get this fixed.

1. Phone call to the parts desk at my dealer to find out the cost of the part £193.50 not the end of the world! He also said that it was that common that BMW had a rebuild kit.

2. Called into the dealer to find the most menstrual lady ever!!! As no matter what I said I was wrong, she was saying that it would need a full diagnostic then pulled some price out of the air!! I asked her to split it down as the part is only £193.50. As she saw I had done my home work lol, in the end she said BMW will most likely not stand by it. So I left not very happy.

3. So tonight on the way home from work I called into the dealer close to my camp, so after getting past the Jack Russell on the mean desk lol, I got to speak to a service bloke, so I went over all the stuff from before, but it was like a hard core Yes No game! Now I have been shown how to Tactical Question and this bloke was good. I just wanted to find out if 1. Would BMW cover the cost 2. Is there anyway to find out if this a known fault. All he kept saying was bring it in and get us to do a diagnostic at £170.00 and we will tell you what's wrong with it.... It got to the point where I was about to goose neck him! In frustration!!

So I asked him to have a look and see if there are any recalls on my car, while I calmed down, he said there was none, and he could see where I was coming from, but the best he could do was book me in for a check up, and if it's what I say it is they will apply to BMW to cover it.

So Tm's what would you do? I think I will just have to bite the bullet.

Find a Non main dealer BMW specialist. They will be able to get the part from BMW, potentially with discount and fit it for you.

I think the "pay the diagnostic fee" is standard, had the same on our lasses BINI when the steering pump failed, wanted £60 to diagnose it.

However reading your post, if I were you I'd be riding up North to your mans dealership and get him to sort it for the £250.

Simon, have a word with ian_w on here he works for BMW and he may be able to shed some light on if it is a reoccurring problem etc...

He deals with most warranty problems at BMW I believe.

Simon does it still have AUC cover? I have never had to pay whilst under AUC.

Once out of cover I have allways taken thm to an indi. getting the money out of BM without cover is posible but the phone bill will make up for it. Unless it was an enigne I would just get it fixed..

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

i'd give them the error code, then the part number of what you want all in writing, if they still insist on the diagnostic fee get them to agree in writing if that error code comes up and the part number is correct you should not be charged the diagnostic fee as its an uneccesary unjust service!
which is completely fair

I see what your saying mate, but they have said that they would not guarantee any parts fitted as they have not done the diagnostic test.

The thing with the dealer diagnostic is that it will tell them so much more than just the error code the Snapon has given you. There are sub codes and sub sub codes these days. The fact that the first thing that happens when the dealer diagnostic is hooked up is that it connects direct with BMW HQ. They can even tell if the ECU has been 'chipped', whether it was chipped previously and then put back to normal. The other fact is that BMW HQ will do things to the firmware in the car that even the technicians do not know about.

I know this as I know a service manager for BMW and only discussed such things a couple of weeks back.

Fact is, the dealer diagnostic will always be that much more informative. Whether the dealer wishes to suggest that it is not, the other fact is, that it is.

Lol!
all depends on the year of the car, if you want the full bmw service history no choice
or you could get the part from ECP or GSM and fit yourself if your feeling brave
but as youre mentioning warranty it seems you have little choice
(although it should be covered surely?)
