Hi there,

Can anyone give me an idea (pics would be great!) of what and where to machine down my metro turbo caliper's to fit under 10" wheels. I already know you need to turn down the discs to 7.9", but i cant find anywhere any info on machining the calipers, other than that its a tight fit!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Rob

I did this many years ago by welding the threaded hole on the hub up, then re tapping the thread towards the wheel centre.

Then a couple os MM was machined off the caliper where it bolts the hup to move it off centre towards the centre of the car and away from the wheel.

That made it almost fit so a little "shaving"of the caliper with the angle grinder was carried out for the tight fit to be completed.

This will also depend on what wheels you run a some are thicker on the inside than others.

I would concentrate on fitting the caliper on the hub/carrier first then worry about disc size after.

This process can be done for next to nothing just a bit of thought and spare time.

Hope that helps.

JF.

Thanks for the reply.

I am using drum brake hub's in my conversion, so i will make up a suitable "backplate" to mount the caliper to the hub, so i wont have to worry about welding and re-tapping the hub.

Doesn't look as hard as i thought. What size disc did you run? Did you have to cut down the pads at all?

Cheers

If I were you I would use disc brake hubs, as these have the correct sized wheel bearing to allow the turned down discs and metro drive flanges to seat correctly.
The discs will not fit onto the drum braked wheel bearings properly, also the drum braked cv joints will be the wrong size for the drive flanges.

I'm using the Drum Brake hub, with a metro stub axles and drive flanges, which will let me run the metro disc. The only difference between the disc brake hubs and drum brake ones are the mounting lugs for the caliper. The wheel bearings are the same (im going to use the timken taper roller bearings)

I think you will find they are not the same at all, the wheel bearings for the disc braked hubs have a different inner and outer diameter than the drum braked hubs.
Also Minis do not have front stub axles, do you mean the CV joints?

Yes i mean't CV.

I'm sure they are the same. My mate is running a metro CV with a drum brake upright on his disc brake conversion (uses a honda city caliper). The timken roller taper bearings for the disc braked cars also fit the drum braked uprights. If they were the wrong diameters they wouldnt.

drum cvs are different to disc cvs but you can put disc bearings and disc cvs in drum hubs

some pics of this conversion would be great*wink*

yup, i use drum brake bearings in my disc hubs...for some reason the ball race type last a hell of a lot longer than the taper ones in my experience.....plus they're half the feckin price!
