The Black Countraaaaay

I've pulled the engine out to change bottom end seals and try to stem the tide of oil on the drive and started wondering whether to change the gearing. Currently got the standard 3.2 turbo ratio but wondered if a 2.9 would make A road and motorway a bit less fraught over 70 mph. Any experiences or advice appreciated p.s I know oil leaks r part of the fun of owning minis but opec r beginning to love me

by the sound of it you have made up your mind. If a 3.2 feels too short then go to a 2.9. That really does have some long legs.

I'm undecided between a 3.1 or 2.9. Been in a car with the 2.7 and it was crap around town. I'm after a versatile ratio for round town and motorway thrashing to shows

This might help. I guess you won't notice much difference between a 3.2 and 3.1 though.

depends what you use the car for?

whats the engine spec? you don't want a really tall final drive if you have a race cam for example.

also what gearset do you run? close ratio gears alter everything, over standard ratio

cheers, dan

the engines a 1293 turbo running 10 psi. Gearset is standard turbo stuff. Looking fr a versatile ratio for everything from round town to 100 odd miles to car shows so thought I'd ask around b4 spending any money

sounds like you want to be inbetween at 2.9

but only you know really, weigh up what you use it most for and make a decision

the guess works calculator is your friend

personally for mostly town/ a roads i like the 3.2 as your not going 100+ the fuel consumption isnt bad @ 70 and its not over-revving

what i found helpful was to use guessworks calc to plot up what i have now then hit the button to save current then put the fd that you think might be ok

for instance i all ways felt first was way short but second slightly to tall for a standing start so i have chosen a gear set and fd that put my new first gear so its just below the old second

hopefully you can make some seance from that!

as i drive mostly highway ive chosen to go for higher a tall fd
