Good morning all, I'm in the process of a rebuild mainly centering around the need for a different camshaft. I removed a Kent 276 that was already in the motor when I fitted the S/C just over a year ago and although fun and lairy, it's manners were to poor with terrible idle and such large overlap it drank like a fish!
Also it probably wasn't timed perfectly and on removal I notice one lobe to be very worn.

So I'm after info from those with an S/C fitted what cam you run and what it's like?

I've trolled all the lists of options, and am looking for the milder road drivable option with great low/mid grunt and running well to about 6k rpm. Also want to get through the MOT and not have a drinking problem!!!

Look forward to your comments,
Thanks

Hi I'm running a 1310 with an eaton 45 and a hiff44 carb I'm still using a 65md4 distributor with vacuum advance connected. I'm using a swiftune sw5-7 cam with 1.5 to 1 ratio rockers.the tick over is a little fast at 1000rpm but it makes the car very drivable around town. With a 3.1 final drive I get 0 to 60 in 9.0 seconds and 0 to 80 in 14 seconds still in third gear. I have changed my final drive to 3.44 now all I do is spin my wheels, back to the drawing board. Other problems I have had fitting the S/C engine and inlet manifold running hot, SU carb freezing up and high crank case pressure.

Many years ago I had M45 on a 1330 with a md276 & 1.5 Rockers, it was quite cammy and really shit on fuel ie 10 mpg. I change to the SW5, and it was much better all round but still had its problems. At that point I sold up and when turbo and I've never look back.

Another option it's the Kent cams 274 injection cam, with 38degrees overlap. Are you running megajolt? If not I'd strongly recommend looking into mappable ignition .

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

274 cam timed at 113 degrees. Yet to drive it in anger, but would definitely recommend mapped ignition.

Thank you guys, not got a mappable ignition system. Just electronic dizzy.

Must say the SW5 was where I was heading but I happen to have an opportunity to have my own cam made up for a very good price and so started looking into what appears to be the holy grail for a supercharged 1275.

Looks like about a 112 degree LCA with relatively short duration and overlap is the ticket?
Funny enough I did check out the Kent 274 which is on 112LCA and thought I could reduce the duration's accordingly, pick the right lift etc.

From what I had read the characteristics of the SW5 sounded tempting but surely it could be adapted to better suit an S/C application. Not looking for much if anything above 6k rpm, just a very well mannered cam that really complements it's application.

Get yer teeth stuck into that!!!

Cheers

North of the Netherlands

I settled for a Stuart Gurr cam: 273 deg 112 deg LCA.
Stuart calls this the "non emmissions cam (270/260 duration)"

He recommended the SW5 when emmisions are an issue which is not the case in my car.

Wasn't too expensive either that cam.

My engine is not assembled yet let alone driven, so cannot comment on performance or economy.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Tezzer, the heat, carb freezing and crankcase pressures are something I'm going to attend to during this project.
I'm just going to permanently open the flow from the cyl head heater take off possible through a small rad and at the same time run a pipe to a made up heated carb/manifold spacer and poss wrap the long manifold near the carb. And for the crankcase set up a breather kit from the rocker cover, crankcase and primary gear housing into a catch tank.

Hopefully that'll be sufficient for my needs?

Cheers

MiniGilly, I fitted my s/c at the beginning of last summer which turned out to be a warm one, bigger rad, bigger fan, 13 row oil cooler used as an additional rad, got rid of the 6 blade metal fan and fitted an electric one so now its cold I have had to change the thermostat cover up the additional rad and not run the heater just to get it up to working temp.
I have run a pipe from the cylinder head outlet to a corrugated copper pipe around the neck of the carb ( Homebase 15mm tap flex pipe) that seemed to have done the trick. you can get electric heaters to go in the air filter. I have made countless modifications to my crank case breathers and collector tanks and have eventually got that sorted. I did make an almost fatal mistake of venting the final breather pipe from the collector tank out of the engine bay under the left hand wing, no oily smell but after an hour on the motorway at 70 no brakes. there is still the problem of the inlet manifold running hot but I will leave that for another time.

Water injection should bring temps down
