So made a start stripping my gearbox and found this not too healthy looking diff housing.
Being that this is my first strip down I was hoping on some opinions, advice and knowledge from you guys.
Is this repairable or am I looking at a new housing?
Cheers

Best option would be to pick up a new housing.

In fact i think they are matched to the box?

Are you sure it's a crack? Not a casting mark. If it is crack you will need both gearbox case and diff housing as they are matched.

It's defiantly raised enough to be a crack.
Doesn't look or feel like a casting mark *frown*

I also think it looks like a casting mark. Anyway easy way to tell, dress it back with a belt sander or similar and see whats 0.5mm or so down.

3rd-ed on the casting mark.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I am going to vote casting marks

I have started posting on Instagram also my name on there is turbomk1golf

Nothing is impossible it just costs more and takes longer.

Give it a good rub down, with some scotch bright and see what you think.

I've just looked at one, it doesn't have any casting marks like that on it.

Sand it and see.

I also suggest it is a casting mark.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Another vote for casting marks.

But to be sure, sand it flat and Dye pen test it.

If you had to replace it, as already said, they are matched to the gearbox, so you have to be very lucky to get a secondhand one that either gives you round holes for the bearings or flat faces for the side plates to bolt to. I tried when one was destroyed by a diff pin failure and although the holes were reasonably round, the flat faces have a 10thou step at the join so will need milling flat as one piece to be able to use it.

After having a closer look the marks appear to be raised (casting marks).
I feel a tad foolish but hey ho, always best to check.
