Flywheel bolt came loose, and the flywheel spun on the crank. Stripped it today, what do you think?

Thanks for sorting the pic, it doesn't look great. I'm wondering if it's worth cleaning it up, new bolt and locating washer, then torquing it up and trying it. Worse thing that can happen is it works loose again, then if it does I'll replace the crank?

I've used worse without problems. I suppose it all depends what is the rest of the crank like? if it's a std crank you may as well replace it on next strip down.

That's good to hear. The crank was ni-tempered or whatever it's called, at med, along with a regrind when I built the engine around 1k miles ago, so in theory the rest should be fine.

I'd give it a good clean with some fine 1200 then a damm good lapping of the flywheel onto it and go again with it

Most of it looks okay, I'd take off the high spots as Eden said and lap the flywheel on and give it a go as it's only a small area of the taper.

It's the same 180° round the crank. What's the best way of lapping the flywheel on the crank please? It's not something I've had to do before! Thanks for the replies!

Valve grinding paste and keep turning the flywheel back and forth on it, make sure all the paste is off afterwards though

Ok thanks, I'll give it a go tomorrow. Course or fine paste? Or both like doing valves?

Fine paste, just enough to take the high spots off.

Make sure you remove as much of the high spots as possible, preferably with a stone, but a file will be ok if you are carefull. If you haven't got acces to marking blue, you can use marker pen on the taper, then without grinding paste rotate the hub on the taper, any high spots will show as metal, keep taking the high spots off by hand, and repeating the marking and checking, then when it is close to being all metal, start with the fine grinding paste.

If you use grinding paste too soon on a taper to lap it in, the largest part of the taper will lap in before the smaller end, and you'll end up with an uneven taper.
