hi wondering if i could do some brain picking, basically i have a temp pronlem as in my water temp reaches 100 deg c and i know this is not the sort of temp i want, avon bar say most of there cars only really reach 70 deg c and i have a similar spec, i am running a standard spec metro turbo engine with ali two core radiator and elecy fan, dont knoe if this makes a difference but have no inner wings. when i am going round town and on boost quite a bit it only really reaches 90 deg c but as soon as i go and cruise at 60 it goes just bellow 100 say 96 as i cant read my dial that accuratly. was wondering if there is any thing that any one can suggest that might be a problem, i advanced my timing a bit and that helped some as temp was reaching 110 before i did that, i am going stir crazy as it is going to be even worse in hot weather, no air locks and running a blanking thermostate or sleeve as its called, would plumming the heater wrong cause a problem with flow ?

ill tell you its the heat soak from the turbo which is getting bloody hot due to a lean mixturer or even a rich mixture will cause this, mine was like it untill i got her set up on the rollers and hey presto all sorted, but i did have a extra rad from the heater take of as well.

also put in a 74 deg thermo stat as them blanking sleves are shit and causes all sorts of probs, and yes i did try one as well and found it made things worse and not better.

so if your fuel mixture is too rich, your engine will run hotter??

Generally, running lean will cause the engine to run hot as the fuel cools the engine.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

must agree with hoggy

i would also like to add,
replace the thermostat for a 74 deg one and throw the blanking sleve over the hedge

they only come into there own right on the track

lastley it seems to me you have NOT got enough capacity with the radiator to cool things

ally conducts heat away fairly good but...
i would suggest this could be at the root cause of your problems if all other things have been checked out like mentioned above!

i run a 4 core with NO over heating issues whatsoever!

is the rad plumbed in correctley?
check this again

Check the electric fan is going the right way !!!

I knew a mate that had similar problems with a 1380. The mech fan was blowing one way and the electric one when it kicked in was blowing the other hence no air moving through the rad the fans were fighting each other. This is my best guess I would check that before anything else.

i now my mixture is rich so will lean it off a bit, only running an elecy fan so no worry bout the two fighting each other there. will get a 74 degree thermostate and see if that solves any thing if not i seems the only other thing is to get a second rad to help things. but its strange that it only gets hot while cruising and not round town when it should be getting hoter from not enought air flow but i will check stuff out cheers for the input guys

handy trick i used to use on my 1380 (and i know other people use it amongst other methods) is to take a feed from your heater tap port and pipe it straight into your rad or into the 90 deg pipe that goes into the rad. Only trick is to make sure you don't lift the pipe above the height of the header in the rad,

yes dan apparently that does work bloody well but havent tried that one yet.

back to fueling i know what you are saying about rich should run cooler and lean hotter, but you have got to remeber things like retarted ignition ect playes havoc with exhaust gas temp as well as wrong mixture settings whilst cruising and booting it.

mine had a problem when running lean whilst cruising which was you couldnbt get a vacuum it kept reading 0 or 2 psi whilst trying to maintain a steady speed along the flat at approx 50-60 mph and the engine temp also rose this turned out to be to lean, also earlier probs with engine temp was sorted out which was to rich through the rev range causing the excess to burn in the turbo which in turn the caused heat soak from the blower to be absorbed into the engine thus causing temp probs.

im not saying all the above is what is wrong with yours but check your ign timing then get her on the rollers before you start to worry about engine temps, thats what i did and now she is spot on.

are you running an oil cooler?

i tried various changes with mine which made small improvements, but when i put on the oil cooler it made a huge difference

i presume the oil was holding the heat in the engine (so to speak)

tryed a bit of mixture messing and some timing but no avail so off to the rollers i think best and most cost affective thing next, could sort out the problems so off i go, yes i have an oil coler and oil temp is staying where it should be eg about 80 degree
