Hi fella's

Ok here's my question is it possible to measure the crank to purchase the right size shells myself or is it better to take it somewhere to have it done.

If it is possible is there a certain way to do it

thanks

Use a micrometer to measure the journal sizes. The shells are sized in + 10thou increments so it it will be easy enough to select the size you need.

If you have the old shells for that crank, it will have the size stamped on the back of them.

Hi Matty i do have the old shells so will look for the numbers in the morning.

I noticed on one of the shells it looked worn through to the brass on one side so I'M expecting it to be worn on said edge.

If the measurements seemed close would I still be ok to just replace the shells

thanks

The main thing to check is that they journal hasn't gone oval. You can do this by measuring the journal say inline with the stroke and 90 degrees to that.

Do the journals look scored? Can you get some pictures up of the journals and bearings ?

I'd say, if you're not experienced doing this, take it somewhere. I know how do measure, and what to look for...Still don't trust myself *wink*

Vegard is right, after 40 years of messing with A series cranks I still have doubts about whether or not to re-use one.

To be fair, unless there is scoring or roughness on the journals and a micrometer will rotate around the journal without being loose or tightening up at any point I will usually re-use it.
I have to say it is a lot easier for me to change an engine on my car than on a mini if I get it wrong though !

Hi guys I'm sorting the pics but for now I can say the crank has no scores and looks to the eye to be in good condition.

The bearings all seem to be wearing on the same edge but again have no nasty marks but one has defo worn more than the others.

The numbers on the shells are 12 g 2527............ 5146.

If those are the only numbers on there then they are standard size.

If in doubt take it to a machine shop have them check and measure it- these guys do this all day every day so know what they are looking at. They can also usually source you the correct bearings to go with it.

Yeh my plan was to measure them myself which I still want to do but then after talking to people on here I will take it to have it done at foxwood's near me. It will be interesting to see how far out I was if any.

I have another block with +20 pistons which I'm thinking of using on the build I bought of the now famous kappa.

So quick question I have a set of new +20 omega pistons and a set of standards metro turbo pistons.
Which would be the best pistons to use forgetting the small size difference if you know what I mean.

Thanks again

Go for the +20's and have your block bored to suit. At least that way you know it will last for a good while.

Nothing wrong with metro turbo pistons, with total seal rings and a snug freshly honed bore.

Ok guys it makes sense to use them as I already have them sat on the shelf.

I just wanted to be sure, there new with .010 shells in them.
The crank that came with this set up may well be correct in size for those shells but there was very little info from kappa so this will need to be check, fingers crossed its all good no regrind.

Not sure where this engine came from whether he bought it complete from someone else or chucked it together in the box,s from all over the place, that said its not all crap there was lots of good parts there just not complete as said.

Cheers
