As my old pulley was looking a bit worse for ware, I decided to buy a MED damper pulley with built in trigger wheel. It arrived today, and although it looks awesome quality, it's not going to fit because the trigger wheel is in the way of where my cam belt runs.

I've toyed with machining teeth into the outer ring, but before I do, I thought I'd see what after market pulleys others are using with the k head?

Cheers
Matt

There's been a lot of debate in the past as to whether using the balance ring for the trigger is a bad thing or not. When you read into crankshaft harmonics, it would appear that while the outer ring does move around the true dead center, it' s by only as much as the crank flexes, in the opposite direction, which can be as much as 0.5 degrees (+- 0.5 degree).

On a turbo motor that shouldn't present a problem as you'll never achieve MBT before reaching det limitation, having to retard from it anyway and if you are 0.5 degrees close to det limitation your in trouble anyway.

Then of course lets not forget that the ECU will filter the raw signal and that the point of most crank flex occurs long before spark initiation. Then we need to look at the fact that the pulley end where the trigger is mounted experiences greater harmonic amplitude than the flywheel end, how do you decide what is correct and what is not. In my eyes, you have to accept the fact that you'll never get the spark initiated at exactly the point you want it to for all cylinders in all conditions, resulting in a compromise one way or the other

Looking at it another way, would you want to introduce the same harmonics into the trigger? surely that is worse than the average that the damper ring would experience?

What I am saying here is that I am not convinced using the damper ring to mount the trigger targets is that bad as some make out. This of course all relies on the damper ring not completely moving on the elastometer in the first instance.

PS. I've been meaning to get the strobe on the damper with the engine on the dyno to see by how much the damper ring oscillates on the a series crank under load. I might just get the chance in the next few months if I can get hold of the appropriate strobe.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

To be honest, machining the teeth on the outer ring wasn't the concern. I just didn't want to start messing about with an expensive damper pulley if I didn't have to.

I'll have another look at it tomorrow and see if it'll fit with the teeth removed. Nothing is ever straight forward. Lol

I know of one pulley where the mass ring shifted, and threw the timing out. I never really liked this idea anyway, and that convinced me that this is best avoided.

Well I decided to bite the bullet...MED trigger teeth are now a pile of swarf and it now has a new set of teeth jim Carrey would be proud of.

Hi Matty, you need to evaluate the fact of MED damper may be very close to the belt drive or even touching the belt drive...

I'm now in producing this one:

The next step is to test it...
