I was just about to renew the wiring on the myford, the motor is a british thompson-huston bc2410 1/3hp

When i bought the lathe i heard it running and it was a nice smooth quite motor however the cables were cut on removal (no bad thing considering their condition) i was hoping to fit a dewhurst style reversing switch but may have to plumb for forward only.

The motor has 4 terminals staring at the top is t2 next has no markings then a2 then t3.

the capacitor is connected to t2 and the terminal with no markings, a red and black wire comes out the motor back plate and connects to the terminal with no markings and a2, there was a mess of wiring and chock block inside the cover coming from the plug and on off switch but ultimately were only connected to the unmarked terminal and a2, now i am assuming that if i connect live to unmarked terminal and neutral to a2 (the two terminals previously connected) it will run in forward and if i reverse the polarity it will reverse the poles and run in reverse?

I take it because it does not have 6 terminals it cant be reversed though the reversing switch just started though the nvr switch?

AC electric doesn't have polarity as such so what you describe will not work.

Your right the first time, need a 6 terminal motor to be able to reverse through a drum switch. You can most probably reverse that motor by changing the start winding in there but only permanently in one direction or the other.

Personally if I was as lucky as yourself to find a 7 for that kind of money I would put a 3 phase motor on it and run through an ac drive, then you get fwd/rev and infinatley variable speed

I will get a 3 phase motor and inverter when it gets moved to its final resting place, i was just looking at a possible cheap alternative until that happens
