Ayup.

Just been chatting to my engine guy who used to work for med. And he was saying that the atb transfers power alot so will only spin one wheel then the other as such? Is this older style ones?

How do you guys find yours? Mine will be thrashed and I don't want one of the silly f.d ratios of the normal lsd. But at the same time I want all the performance.

Hope this makes sense, cheers eden

My ATB transformed the car, I loved it. You can feel it tighten up and then your on rails.

I find mine great when thrashing it, but normal driving you can tell it's there, as it feels a bit snatchy on normal manoeuvres. Steering goes from light to heavy on the bends. At first I didn't like the feel, but you soon adjust.

I was in the same boat, I wanted a normalish FD so the ATB was a no brainer for me. Really pleased with it in mine, made a hell of a difference for a road car.

If it was pure track then I'd go with a proper LSD but otherwise ATB all the way.

As above these are REALLY good, ypu cant tell they are there untill they are needed, and when they do work they are not snatchy like other diffs....

However!! they can highlight suspension setup issues, eg bad corner weights could give the effect of pulling one way then the other.

I've really got no choice as I want a 3.1 fd.

I assume atb's of old were a bit more fierce then?

i think the very very early ones were a bit different, but your unlikly to come across one of those so I wouldnt worry.

I'm really thinking I want an lsd, as Im going to be doing alot of track days this year so il run a 3.4fd.

So med and Minispares ones are about 500 or there's the trans x mk6 for 700 what's the best option there?

This thread has got me thinking now. I've got an ATB that i bought in the group buy on here but the intended usage of my car has changed slightly now.

It'll see a lot more track action than originally intended so what is the concensus of opinion? Is an LSD the way to go?

Does anyone know the torque bias ratio that the ATB's are design to?

Quaife suggest that the ATB is suitable in all situations where an open diff is not.

It is a limited slip diff the does not lock. That alone is a good thing as you'll never over stress anything else. I've seen plenty heavy duty driveshafts twisted in rally where plate LSD's have been used as well as in grass track where they tend to weld the diff entirely closed.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Not in Minis but I've had both plate type LSD's and Quaife fitted to my 205's.

Simply, for a car used on the road the Quaife is the better choice. For a car used on a track the plate diff is the better choice. The Quaife relies on the suspension being more compliant for it to work. Lift a wheel with a Quaife and it will spin.

got an atb in my turbo. last had it on the rollers putting out 160bhp, but have made a few changed and upped the boost since.

on the road you can boot the car, it puts all of the power down to the road...no wheel spins, no fighting with the steering, its pretty smooth.

can be a bit hairy on the bends though....got an old school hybrid t3 which come on boot all in one go. coming on cam, boost and with gear changes on bends can be a bit snatchy but nothing to worry about...

in fact I took the car out earlier to play with the bleed valve and it was a pleasure to drive...
