just wondering if its worth opening up the inlet/exhaust manifolds as the head seems to be enlarged slightly do the benefits outweigh the disadvantages if there are any?

Gav, from what I've seen Keith Calver say, having a smaller opening on the head inlet port than on the inlet manifold output side gives a "step" that air gets over. This, though not good for flow, is good for horsepower. I think that it causes more tumble in the air/fuel mix. So you might want to give that a try. As for matching on the exhaust (you'd want them matched, not stepped), that is a good idea due to low-pressure eddies creating a virtual restriction if there is a mis-match.

It's definatley worth matching the exhaust manifold to the head. As you can see on the picture below the manifold has been sitting inside the port on the head, this is obvious due to the carbon build up on the manifold face. I matched the manifold to the gasket, as the head had been ported in this manner.
