does any one know what the little white peral shaped thing on the side of the 74 degree thermostate is for

ensures the coolant flows round the block even when the 'stat is closed.

Without it you can stall the flow of water even with the pump moving lots of water about the block and head!!

It also lets the air out the block when you fill the rad
