My engine is burning oil at the moment but I would like to know what is the cause of it.

So far the compression is good and even throughout all the cylinders.
Spark plugs don't have oil on the end.
No smoke from the breathers on idle or under hard revving.

When I boot it hard I get a ploom of blue smoke and on idle i did notice today after a long trip it was puffing a little on idle but usually it doesn't so could have just been the excess oil in the exhaust or where ever it is in the engine.

It does smoke on first start up too.

Could this be down to a turbo oil seal and the valve stem seals now?

Cheers

Sounds like one of the two mate, neither is a fun job lol. Is it all running well now?

Hopefully one of the two as I can't really be bothered to do piston rings!

Can I replace the valve stems with the head on? Also how is this done? Never done it. Of course this is me speculating that its the problem.

Yeah it's running much better now, John got me running around 7-8psi this afternoon.

Have you done a wet compression test (oil in the bore to see if it increases the pressure)?

Any oil in the turbo/intercooler piping?

The van used to lift valve stem seals off, might be worth lifting the rocker box off.

How much oil should I put in the bores andy?

Can't say I have noticed any in the intercooler pipe work.

It only started to smoke when I changed the oil from the shitty bed in stuff to valvoline VR1

What's the drain like? Any restriction here and the turbo can drop oil out of the seals. Ask Wintersurfer.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

16 is small, stock is 3/4 so nearer 22mm

Have you got a picture of how it's plumbed?

Hummm that's a tough one if say, it's a nice simple shape but it is 16 mm.

Wait for some other options on that one

Yeah it's the same diameter as the pipe coming out of the turbo which is why i thought it would be ok.

Might be worth me just changing the valve seals just to prove it isn't them since they are cheap?

What seals are on the head?

You don't want the cheap ones.

Not sure Jonny, Shithead (kappa) got the head from turbo phil he said.

Can they be replaced without taking the head off? make some sort of compressor that comes off the head studs?

Was the head fresh? If I was me I'd be tempted just to whip it off and check the guides.

I've had the same symptoms with guides before

It looked to have very little use before i fitted it. Nice and clean around the valves.

Might just whip the head off tonight, not sure yet.

I will do a wet comp test tonight before taking the head off.

Just been and got some stem seals and a head gasket.

Wet and dry compression results.

Looks alright too me, what do you think?
